I see it posted all the time that a larger exhaust won't help until I hit 500HP. I am putting a fueling box on but that will be about it performance wise. My concern is EGT. Would replacing the factory muffler help reduce EGT's? What options are out there besides the big ol' Donalson monster that will not produce a drone? What exhaust would be to big and actually hurt me? I was thinking about just replacing the factory muffler with an Aeroturbine or Dynomax but i read about the NASTY DRONE! Let me know what you guys think.

TIA!!!!

I have a 4" from turbo back and yes it makes a drone at certain speeds, but I don't mind. I like my truck to be noisey. As far as the EGT, I think I remember anywhere from 100 to 150 degrees lower temps after my exhaust. Maybe 200 at the most. I too was worried about temps when I installed my EZ. If your not running too hot now with the box then I wouldn't worry about it.

I think the stock manifold is pretty restrictive so I think if you also install the ATS manifold you will see greater reduction in temps. Good luck finding an aftermarket exhaust that doesn't drone to some degree.

But what about just replacing the muffler? Does any one know if a flow thru muffler will help EGT's w/o replacing the rest of the exhaust?

Your exhaust pipe is 3. 5 to the muffler so whatever restriction that causes over the 4". It would be hard to really quantify. I don't think it would make that much difference. JMO.

JARichard, I have an'03, HO, 4X4, 6-sp. Your system should be 3-1/2" from the turbo to behind the muffler into the tail pipe where it expands to 4". I had read that if you place the free-flowing muffler right behind the down pipe (under the shotgun seat), you have less chance of getting the drone. What I did was go to Muffler Dealer's Whse. , in Gilbert AZ. and bought a Magnaflow 24" muffler #MAG 12772, along with a 3-1/2 " to 4" transition (reducer) #MAG 15441. Muffler was $68. 44, transition was $13. 25, =$81. 69. The muffler shops in town wanted $125. 00 just for the muffler. I took these items to Pro Muffler in Peoria, AZ. Muffler installation was $30. 00. He had to buy a 10' length of 4" aluminized pipe for between the muffler and the tailpipe section. That was $50. 00. With tax it was $84. 65. Total price was $166. 34. I've towed to Las Vegas with it and driven around town. Haven't noticed any drone, at all. Has a bit of a "B-R-R- R-A-A-P-P, sound to it at 1800-1900 rpm's. The Aeroturbine seems to have a harsher sound. This is more mellow. Doesn't quite sound like a diesel, though. I find I drive withe the windows down just to hear the muffler. Joe Donnelly wrote that He liked the sound of the Allied muffler, the best. Hope this helps!

I bought a 4" system with straight through muff from Rip. I've noticed about 100° egt reduction and no drone. I don't hear the diffrence on the highway with the windows up. Does have a throaty growl on the bottom end though.
