2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission dumb exhaust question

Ok... stupid exhaust question for ya'll. I put on my Jardine Exhaust... a longggg time ago. After looking at it I now want to redirect my exhaust tip. I have them darn Guilatine clamps on... so they pretty much press the pipe together.



Is it possible to maybe take a torch to the pipe, heat it up and possibly redirect it? Or once the pipe is together and clamped is it pretty much stuck that way? I tried unclamping it and moving it with no luck... and I wasn't sure if a torch would do the trick or not.

The torch should free it up enough to turn, might also tap lightly around the area where it is crimped with a small hammer when heated. bg

Probobly not gonna work with a torch, the clamps usually crimp one side pretty bad, making it impossible to move. If you have a sawsall, and are good at operating it, you'll have a chance. I would recommend using SS band clamps in the future, a little more expensive, but alot nicer and removable. IMO

If you can heat the outer pipe cherry red all of the way around you should be able to move it. We can usually remove the pipes when heated like that.

well, with the stock exhaust (went to straight pipe) my dad and i had to heat the tailpipe/muffler connection cherry red and use some muscle to get it off. it DID come of though so it's obviously possible

I wish you luck. I had to use a carpenter's torch (sawzall) to get my stock system disassembled. I plumbed in a 3" straight pipe using the traditional clamps. I didn't tighten them to the point of distortion though, just tight. I have removed the straight pipe and tailpipe twice without any trouble.



I hope you don't have to resort to the flame torch. It can be tough on the aluminized coating.

John Actually I was referring to using a Flame torch... . are you telling me that it is not a good idea to do so?

It can be. Depends on the amount of heat and duration. If you're just looking to twist the tailpipe unit it may be without much torch action. My rusty stock unit had a lot of twist and flex after dropping the strangler clamps and using a lot of WD-40. I couldn't get it apart, but it did twist.



Do use the SS band clamps for re-assembly as Rob suggested. The transitions areas must be in good condition and mostly flat, too. If the strangler clamps distorted things you'll have to coax them smooth.
