I got a dumb question.

How does one go about getting the rear brake drums off the hubs?

Thanks for all the help guys

pop the rubber plugs off the backing plate (on the inside) see which way the star wheel will turn with a screwdriver... this will be the direction to adjust brakes out. You need to turn it the other way..... do this by sticking another screwdriver thru another slot and pushing the locking plate away from the starwheel, this will allow the wheel to turn the other direction causing the pads to move away from the drum. If you need more e-mail me and I will send my phone #. Tony

They are just rusted on unless your brakes are dragging or e-brake is on. Take the wheels off and beat the drum flat side with a sledge. A gentler method is to jack both rears up with the wheels off, start truck and brake hard in forward and reverse while spinning the drums in gear. Sometimes there are some clips on a couple of lugs that need to be removed. Take them off and toss them, their only purpose was to hold the drums on in the assembly line.

Thanks illflem, 1tony1

A mechanic told me I had to pull the axles like the chebys.

I hadn't tried to pull the drums off at that time so I couldn't really argue.

Thanks again

I can get these off if they are like every other drum I've replaced brakes on.

I took mine off last week. I tried the beat on them method but was afraid of hitting them too hard and I tried the wheels off the ground and run the truck method. What worked as my oxy/acetalene torch by heating up the drum all around the centre between the wheel studs. You will hear them snap loose. Just be careful not to use too much heat.

I banged and banged, then tried the

jack both wheels up and start truck

put in gear and hit the brakes method.

(My Pops was laughing the whole time)

Well, Pops stopped when both hubs fell right off.

Word to the wise, leave one lug nut on so they won't

hit the floor.

Slickest way to do it!!!!

A big brass mallet (NOT STEEL), some WD40 inside and out. Hit the shoe sides of the drum, turn and pull out at the same time. Also, like the man said, make sure the star wheel is released.
