Help Quick! Questions about possible "new" Ram!

Just acquired a '98 CTD and I'm a bit confused about the engine we have. The VIN indicates that it's the 24 valve ISB however, the build date is October, 1997. The engine plate says "B59-180. " I believe that I read someplace that the 1998. 5's with the 24 valve ISB began production in January 1998. Di we have the 12 or 24 valve? Also, the CPL # is 2174 which I could not find listed anywhere. Any help would be appreciated.

Also... we're not new to diesels but, we are to Cummins. I'm looking for a decent mechanic in the San Fernando/Simi Valley area of Los Angeles to have a good look at the engine and do fluid changes. I am particularly leery of going to the local Dodge dealer. Help on this front is also appreciated.

Thanks!!

If there are six valve covers you have a 12 valve. It may or may not have a fake roof over the six. If there is one long homely valve cover you have a 24 valve.

12-valve

According to Piers Site you have the 12-valve. The CPL you listed is in the 180hp column.

On your 2nd question, sorry I don't live anywhere near you so I can't be of any help.

Mike

Thanks! It's a 12 valve. Found the Cummins distributor in Ventura and taking it up tomorrow for the servicing.

Thanks, again!
