Dump Trailers? And Weight of a YD of Red Dirt

I have been looking at Gooseneck Dump Trailers. They are rated up to like 10+ tons and some of them will cary 20+Yards. Has anyone used any of these and how much do you think a Yard of Fill dirt weighs?

jponder, I have seen them, but I have not pulled a "goose" dump trailer. I always use the "rule of thumb" that dirt weighs about 100 lbs per cu ft, so 1 cu yd would weigh 2500 / 2700 lbs. . jm2cw. .

Jponder,wow those are big trailers,a big dump truck only holds 12 yds max(legal)I think your numbers are off a bit ,a cu. yd. of gravel weighs 3,000# a cu. yd. of soil is 2700 to 3500 pending on moisture content and type of soil.
I used to own a Kaylen self contained dump trailer and was very satisfied with it,it was GN and the bed itself was 12' long it had 3' sides on it and if you loaded it with soil to the max you didnt want any more weight trust me,I sold it and bought a dump truck,now I would like it back,if you find on make sure it has 8 lug wheels and 16" tires and 7,000 or 8,000# axles or you will be sorry. it had its own hydrolic system,12v motor and a battery, I put a long welding lead on it and when dumping I would strech it out and hook it up to the truck as it was very hard on batteries. I think your a bit heavy with you dirt weights wet concrete is 150# per cu ft



Road base which is a bit heavyer than dirt weights about 2600# per yd and dirt should be a couple 100 #s lighter



I am looking for a Dump trailer preferably w/ sides and tailgate that can be removed for a flat surface Anyone know of an decent make?

I ended up getting a "bri-mar" out of pennsylvania. Got a pretty good deal from chambersburg farm service. ( Chambersburg PA ). Bri mar does not sell direct. But the dealer across the street was close enough. 0$ transportation. I have not used it enough- Originally I wanted to haul my compact tractor on it-- Deck is high and the ramps are too steep. When the front tires are coming up and the rear implement would not touch the ground until you are upside down, you rethink what you are doing. ( nothing bad happened ) Still a good dump trailer. That gave ne an excuse to get a 24' GN dovetail with a deck over neck to store the front implements. My dump trailer with some options ( ramps, tarp, tiedowns on neck and deck, extra rub rails on neck ) ran about 7K acouple of years ago. That is a 14,000# full deckover dump 102" By 16' The cheap ones cheap out on the tires and suspension ( mine have the goodyear polysteel g124??) Narrower dump body is cheaper and lower. If I use it for moving dirt on the property I will need to put in some "forklift" type leads. It will not recharge for a while on a dump cycle.

There are some decent prices on Ebay for new dump trailers. The big triple axle used dual hydraulic pistons though, I've heard bad things about that but maybe it wouldn't be to much to upgrade to a scissor.

I bought a 10,000 gross ez dump on ebay for 2,900. 00 it was 5months old and looked brand new. For landscaping Im enjoying it, and I was able to sell the 1973 f600 for 1800. 00 Sooo No more commercial inspections!

You can put way more weight in these dump trailers than the truck, trailer, and tires can handle. Just something to think about when buying/loading one.



I believe this one was an 18ft dump with removable sides.

A Truck and trailer (Slam Bang) averages 24. 5 tons of road base (gravel) there is just a bit over 18. 5 yds in this load I doubt that you could legally haul over 25 tons in this trailer Now if you use your set up to haul light material like insulation or any thing that weighs less than 1000 lbs / yd now that may be work

MMeier, I am located north of San Francisco a few miles, I haven't figured out how to place my location on my posts yet, sorry. turns out I did talk to the PJ factory today as I had found there web site but could not find any spec's on the site They are sending me specs on a unit I forget it's model number but it is an over the tire trailer dump with removable sides. I was an excavating contractor but I now I am trying to stay retired, Heck it would cost over 1200 dollars to license my Ford 9000 10 wheel dump truck each year and then I would need to insure it and deal with the BIT program so I want to keep things simple and a trailer with dump would be nice. Right now I am gathering information to help me make up my mind on what features I want on a new dump trailer and which company makes a nice unit to fit my needs

The PJ seems like a nice unit

I am leaning toward a pull hitch vs an 5th wheel at this time Unless someone on this site can give me a good reason to go with a 5er

When I was looking the Liberty was a little more money than the Titan.

I was referring to 20 yds of topsoil. When i haul gravel i can haul 23 ton legal which should come out to approx 17. 9 yds. I'd have to do the math on hauling feathers. I'm not running a tractor trailer.

The Liberty was pretty spendy. I don't remember the exact number but it was around $7000 for a heavy duty low profile 14' with a set of ramps.



The Titan was around $6400 for a similar trailer.
