Powerstrokes Are Not Powerjokes !

UMMMmm - ya might wanna recheck the graphs - it takes the Cummins HO engine with a 6 spd transmission to better the stock DM with the Allison - and it only does THAT in torque by about 20 ft lbs... The automatic equipped Cummins falls quite a bit short, when comparing maximum values...

I realize we Cummins owners will point to the broader hp/torque curves of the Cummins, but a properly operating DM will do a good job at the operating point it was designed for for maximum performance - and will do it better than the equivelant Dodge/Cummins, other than the HO/6 spd setup...

Then again, at least they have a crew cab. I think DC is going to lose alot of customers if they don't make a REAL crew cab. :(

I would go out tomorrow and buy a crew cab 2500 if DC would make one. It would be a PITA to start over on the mods, but hey - a real crew cab would be worth it...

Yea, I know stock a Duramax wins, but look at the ETC with a Comp on level 5 and the Duramax with the Juice. They both have about the same RWHP but look at the torque on the Cummins. Thats what I'm talkin' about. ;)

Chevies are shiftless

Gary,

If you can stand the DM shifting in and out of 5 th gear all day long on a flat stretch of highway, "just to stay in the working range" of the engine. Then I guess it'll do the same job. For me I would like to stay in one gear most of the time.

Check it out, constant shifting is one of the hottest threads at the Weaselpage. Sheeh, its like driving a Honda, gotta stay in that small torque range to stay alive.

I know DC lost me. I wanted a crew cab and went to GM for it and the DM/Allison Combo is nice.

I must admit that it does a better job than my previous 94 and 99 Rams. Both where stock autos.

If DC had made a crew cab and had a better auto I would have stuck around. 90% 0f my driving is empty, so I like the ride of the GM over the SFA when empty.

If in four or five years that itch for something new comes back and DC has heeded the cries I'd get another CTD.

I think some of us are missing an important point here. Not that the Chevys are ugly or a crew cab or 20 ft lbs. Look where the maximum torque is. 1500 to 1800 not 2200 to 2500 rpm. That is where a truck with a load needs the grunt. The GM's are fine equipment. Teething problems sure, but every new vehicle has them.

WELL, *I* just bought a brand-new truck to haul MY load up the grades - I *coulda* bought any of the "big 3", but take a look at my sig to see what I chose...

Nuff said?:p ;) :D

Absolutely NO regrets!Oo.

Gary - KJ6Q,

Well, you upgraded did you? Best of luck with your new truck ... ... .

After my sales pitch you still bought a new Cummins ... ... . LOL

Don't wack me to hard ... ..... Remember I'm a friendly ... .....

There is a software upgrade for the Allison "shift business" ..... Some have had success with it others still complain, for me it was a non issue ..... With a shot of juice ..... Downshift what ta Hell is that ... ... . Gets in top gear and stays put ..... All the way to a speed record 100 mph  Well it least it gets there quickly ... ... .

:D

Ps What happen to post numbers ? I'm all most a new guy again ..... I all ready no I'm the BLACK SHEEP of the forum . . LOL

You're onto our game Mac-trim down your post #'s gradually. We're going after Burnsie next! :D :D :D Just joking-put down that bat!

Seeing as you two are the resident D/A fellas on here, can either of you give me a rough idea what an extended cab LWB 4x4 2500 D/A weighs in at? Curious how much weight I was giving up to the one I ran leaving Edmonton the other day... ... last time I weighed in with a full tank of fuel and my fat butt in the driver's seat I was at 8300 lbs. -thinking probably closer to 8500 now with the few extra tools and garbage I've accumulated since... ...

Back to the topic at hand-there's a compressor company in these parts that's switching their fleet from 5 and 6 speed CTD's to 6 speed Duramaxes. These trucks won't see the kind of hard use that an operator puts their truck through-but they still haul a service body full of junk around to various leases across the province-believe they tow compressors out to lease with them as well. It'll be interesting to see how they hold up compared to the Dodges. I've asked a couple of the fellas with them how they like them-so far the ones I've talked to have preferred the CTD. By no means though have I canvassed the entire company. Starting to see a few more D/A's in contract operator's stables as well-but again I haven't had a chance to talk to anyone running one to compare mileage etc... ... I sure hope the suspension is greatly upgraded in the 2500HD's as compared to the 1500's-the lead at our plant has a 1500 and with a piddly amount of tools (realistically his toolset would fit into 2 milkcrates at the most-probably 1 would hold them with very little overflow) it hits the rear bumpstops all the time. You can't compare his truck to mine-it's like making the comparison between a tack hammer and a 10 lb. sledge :D ! My truck is overkill for the job I do-suits me just fine though. :)

I have been meaning to take my truck and camper to a CAT scale but have not done so yet.

Propaganda, I mean brochure from Chevy list it at just over 6000 pounds. But that is base model, I am guessing loaded with fuel and your normal tool box etc a D/A equipped one will weight about 7250.

Again I plan on taking mine to a scale soon but it is a crew cab--short bed. Probably close to a extended cab long bed though.

My camper puts close to 2000 pound of hitch weight in the bed an I can barely tell when the weight is on the hitch. Very little rear end droop.

And no I will not put down the bat, you first... so your looking for an excuse as to why you got beat(blame it on being heavier)?

;) :D :p

Hansen got beat? I think not. . It would take 2 DM's to make the torque he's pullin. He ain't no stocker saint... .

Torque, HP, crew cab, whatever... . After racing a Duramax recently, I can see they are not to be taken lightly. A hot blonde girl in a black 4 door DM/A gave me a run for my money on the interstate. Even with my truck equipped with DD3's, a Powermax Competition, and the top end from a Piers Hx40, it was only on the hills that I gained a lot of ground on her.

Truck had Wyoming tags on it, we were in West Virginia at the time.

That having been said, I'd rather have my steering problems with the Dodge, than the plastic bedsides and too-soft ride on a Chevy.

What brand of truck a guy or gal drives won't stop me from being friends with them, if they are cool. :D But it better be a diesel.

WEIGHT

JHansen,

You are real heavy ... ..... My dually scales at 7500 ... . With a cross rail box full of crap ... .

Sucks to be fat........

... . but whaddya gonna do? Hard enough to put me on a diet let alone the truck! :D

I suspect the D/A I squared up against was a stocker..... to be absolutely honest I didn't know at the very start we were squaring up although the passenger's stares at the Cummins ISB badging while we were coming up to the light should have tripped a light bulb in my brain! :) Had I known I'd have tried a little harder out of the hole-in the big scheme of things it really wouldn't have mattered-odds are good they'd have covered me anyways. As it was by the time I figured out what was going on they had me by a length-and-a-half anyways-stretched that to around 3 lengths with my weenie gear changes by the time I hit 4th gear (my 6 speed shifts nice and I ain't screwing that up with power shifts-unless we're racing for Denise Richards-in which case I'll Earnhardt you, your mother, and/or your 98 year old grandmother! :D :D :D). From mid-4th on though I owned him-ran up to 3/4 way through 5th to get right back up to him-decided a speeding/stunting/reckless driving ticket wasn't worth it (tail end of a construction zone and the regular speed limit was 80 km/h anyways). I figured out what I needed to know-D/A's are fairly quick off the jump-but I can still outrun 'em if I need to! :D Now that the South Bend is in I may actually be able to use 5x5 too-running on 3x5 at the time of the encounter.

Be interested to see what you scale in at Burnsie-my 2500 LWB 4x4 with every bell and whistle in the book scaled at around 7000 lbs. with a full tank of fuel when it was new. Too much crap on mine to play with the top guns-but it's a work truck-how else do you think I can justify this kinda rig? :)

Thanks for the vote of confidence J-Man! I'm gonna be down in your part of the world here before DDS-maybe we can hook up for lunch again? Hear anything from the Wee One lately? I've been trying to get hooked up with him-but no success. I do have his cell phone # but I hate to call anyone's cell unless they're oilfield trash like myself in which case I ring up extra time! :D

JHansen,

Dude, not you ..... You're truck ... ... GHEESH ... .

Man it's so easy to get miss read ... ...

You're to funny ... ... . Great post ... ... :D :D

Yeah I knew you were talking about the truck Mac-unfortunately I fit that category too. Could stand to lose around 30-40 lbs. -or grow 3-4 inches. Seeing as the latter part probably won't occur I must resign myself to trying to lose my Molson muscle one of these days! The truck's only gonna get fatter unfortunately-still need on-board air-probably a hydraulics system-and whatever other garbage I can't live without! :D

As for the Earnhardting-there's a few others that I'd spin to win for. I'll have to sit down one of these days and start composing my list I guess! :D At least when he spun you out he had the brains to come up with a reason why it happened-unlike Captain Brain Dead himself Kurt Busch. Most of these guys now couldn't carry Dale's jockstrap..... but that's an entirely different thread altogether!
