Stupid jokes inside...

A friend of mine has a 2005 Duramax 6. 6L. He was changing his fuel filter and found OIL in the intercooler, about 1/2 ounce.

He took it to Chevy and they said it was "normal". They even read him part of the shop manual that said it was "normal", and the truck was not smoking excessively eventhough it was smoking considerably and mileage was poor.

IS THIS NORMAL for a Duramax?????????

The turbo is fed with an oil line... . excess oil from the oil system returns to the crankcase through a drain... . if the seals in the turbo drip oil on the fresh air side... some oil will end up in the air stream... . some is expected in all turbo charged engines... . what chevrolet deeps excessive is their issue... one of the key issues with all trucks is the cool down time before shut down, which allows fresh cool oil to bring down the temperature of the hot turbo before shut down... . which one benifit is... . less heat damage to the seals...

Oil on the fresh air side burns like diesel fuel and doesn't usually cause enough smoke to be noticed... on the other hand oil leaking on exhaust side will burn in the exhaust steam and leave a smoke trail...

What you need to ask your friend if he has ever used a cool down procedure when hes pulled in after a long hot run... . after I've been pulling hills or have been working it hard on the freeway and pull into a rest area... I just let it run... an cool down...

Hope this helps...

it's simple. PCV (positive crankcase ventilation) ford and chevy both use it.

Restricked air filter's dont help with this ither,,,, Wanna here a diesel sound really mean... wait till hear one run off on OIL.

I agree with partsman. The D-Max draws oil vapor into the intake system via the PCV and the end result is oil residue in the intake.

partsman and Rosco got the answer. VW TDI's do the same thing.

Wait until he sees what that oil looks like when it mixes with the EGR gasses in his intake (I think Duramaxapads have EGR?)

At 100K my VW intake was closed up to around a 1/2" hole!

Im not sure if they have EGR or not. .

I know the 6. 0's do ford has a problem with them sticking because they get to much build up on them, so ford tried to fix it with a new PCM reprogram to rapidly open and close the EGR valve to knock it off crud... . which messed up with the idle LOL and I think they still have the problem of EGR valve sticking.
