Look at this

duRAMax......

13200 miles, smoke bellowing out, still good power and take-off. gm says injector problems, i say computer problems. the biggest issue here is experience, gm techs have to send everything up the latter by computer, while diagnosing, and that takes time, so far a week. before all of my ctd buddies start to snicker, my 2002 3500 ctd has been in the shop for a week waiting for parts to replace anti slip rear end part. does dc have any concept on overnite delivery? do they care? in the meantime, we are using, and enjoying , our mules the 1st gen backups, newer aint always better:cool:

I realize that relative locations, circumstances and dealerships vary - but ONE impressive item occured when My RVing bud blew the automatic transmission on his '99 Ford Super Duty up along the Oregon coast a couple of weeks ago...

We got his truck into the Florence Oregon Ford dealer shortly before noon on Wednesday - the dealership determined the truck would need a replacement transmission and an obligatory new transmission cooler - Ford will NOT allow the old cooler to remain in the truck with a failed transmission due to contamination fears with the NEW transmission - so new parts were ordered for the truck...

By 11 am the next morning, ALL required parts were on the Florence dealers floor ready for install - the transmission was overnighted by freight outta San Francisco, and a new cooler was overnighted outta some place in Tennessee - the new transmission was IN the truck, and truck BACK on the road by 4 pm that same day!

Now THAT's *SERVICE*!;) ;)

If you read on the GM site, injectorsseem to be a common wear item at high miles,(200K+),and on a few trucks under the 100K warranty. They are very expensive. It sounds like an injector to me.

sniffle

Packman,

I know how you use your trucks, and I was doing similar work with mine. Minus all of the nice new interior and ride technology, my first gens are the best trucks I have ever owned. I am going to have to sell one of them, and that is real tough to choose. Sorry to hear about the truck problems, hope they all get fixed soon. If they can perform a cylinder cut out test like you can on the cummins electronic engines, they should be able to figure out which injector it is pretty quick, but I am not familiar with the duramax.

That is bcuz Phord has lots of experience REPLACING trannies ;)

Seriously, every manufacturer should be that efficient. Jdecampo summed it up perfectly.

On the other hand....

Having owned one of Ford's better ideas, (1999PSD) their customer service can also be an excellant sales tool for Dodge. After trying five different dealers who couldn't/wouldn't fix a slipping transmission still under warranty, I drove straight to the local Dodge dealer and traded that POS in on a new Dodge.

Old IRON tough to beat...

I too have a hard time looking at new when this ol girl just keeps on going. No electronics to screw up but not all the toys you guys have. . But I don't need leather that bad. .

Good luck on your new rides.

well the parts came in from dc on friday. the dealer had his mech work on sat. [labor day weekend] impressive. the only problem the rear end part was defective right out of the box, it had been shippped from another dealer, fed ex, and after the mech put it in, he noticed there was a tolerance or fitting problem in the gear teeth. so dc made me wait 5 days to get a defective part that had been dumped on us by a dealer who probably knew the rep part was bad. in the meantime the duramax is still down as gm figures what they want to do. the dealer service has been great on both ends, but the factory response has s... . d. any surprises?Oo.

Packman... I have a 2001 3500 Duramax / Allison... I put a lot of Miles on a year... I have replaced 7 Injectors on my truck and the 8th one is going... . The first 3 @ 107500 Mi (Just Out Of Warrenty... They paid for 1/2 the cost) Another 1 which started Dumping Fuel into Oil @ 121794 Mi and another 3 @ 135000 MI..... These Injectors cost me $639. 00 Cdn. . !!!! (415. 00 U. S. )

Gm says they don't know of any other problems with Injectors. . !!!

My 1998. 5 Dodge has 576000 Km (357926 MI) and no Injectors replaced yet

Preluber,

I have been saying since '83 that GM wrote the book on how to deny warranty, seems to still be true. DC has read the book too :{

well, i,m sure the gm posts will be sure to say that they have had no problems with their duramaxes, and we are all just trying to bad mouth their new diesel. when we bought ours it was just to see how this truck performs, and it has done well, we are still under warranty, but i dont like an engine related failure this early. our powerstrokes are kind of the same way, turbo failures and fuel problems, early on, but great trucks after break in. these drivetrain problems with our ctd's pretty much reaffirm what i've always thought, the motor will last forever, no dought, the weakness is in the rear, dana are you listening? my dealer said it was a dc part with a dana stamp, that was sent to us "reassembled" that is not acceptable to me... .....

question for packman

Back to the top. Packman, what kind for fuel milage #'s are you getting when you compare the Cummins/Dura??? By now you should have enough experience that you have an idea which is going to cost more to operate. Thanks!

No, I'm not thinking about trading - just haven't seen comparable numbers from a source I could trust.
