welding on truck?

Yes, stock for stock the cummins has less Hp. The torque is still the most usable & at the lowest rpms.

With everything we put these engines through, if we were to leave ours totally stock, it would have a he!! of an overengineering factor.

Where as the internals of the other 2 motors are not near as heavily built.

Youre absolutly right NETim.

I have an aquaintence at an engine machine shop and he got some industry low down and some blue prints on this engine. He is a hell of an engine builder-- mostly hy-po work -- and he is a dedicated chevy man. According to him this duramax wont last 100k... .....

Mostly compression vs. aluminum heads, bottom end, and there was somthing he didnt like about the head bolts... .

Shep is dissapointed that GM is going to Izuzu for a diesel, when ( and most dont know it... ) cat had an engine prototyped for the GM pickup.

CAT vs. Izuzu ? ... . duh...

I am baffled... .

Time will tell !!

I said it before and I will say it again , as a past "Gm" sales man ( but driving a dodge cummins ), we were handed info about the "dura-joke" before the truck was anounced to the public , ( now for the JOKE part ! ) GM boasted the new diesel will last up-to 200,000 mi ? and the sales team to use this info as a tool for generating sales ? . Now just watch what GM dealers will think of there new diesel when trade-in time comes when they have 150-200th mi on the clock ! ,when I traded my 90'ctd for my 2000'ctd the dealer gave me $7000. with 178000 mi. on the old tank and said " she still has alot of life in-er " . Having a 7000 series GMC since 84 and no problems and an 80 1 ton diesel that went 250,000 plus 96 Grand Sport Corvtte & 99 Corvette I road race I guess I'm Chevy guy. I did a job for a friend who has 6 Dodges 2500 & 3500's. I really didn't look much at the Dodges till then. I was going to buy a V10 from him but the mileage scared me. I found the Dodge I bought at a dealer that matched my 99 Vette color which I will tow with it. I went back to look at the Chevy's and was not that excited about the engine the interior or the look. I had a friend that towed boats for Skater Boats all over the country with 300,000 on a bunch of ISB's engines. The engine is proven. The few HP more things have didn't really matter. I have had the truck for 2500 miles but I am happy with every thing about it even he noise:D . Now if I had the EZ comp and transmission it would be perfect. I had a Ford Super Pooper 450 and it never started the first time you turned the key after the first year. Even after 6 weeks in three differnt dealerships:-{}

You would think DC would toss us a bone . Whether the Duramax is or is not as advertised the increased sales of GM HD trucks is directly related to falling market share for DC . :( Everyone wants to have a truck that someone else envies :D I really like my truck-(my second CTD). At times I wish it were a real crewcab, my wife appreciates the ease with which she can park in the garage at work. :)Looking at an ever increasing # of '03 1500 quadcabs on the streets I have to believe that DC has a winner in this segment. I sure hope they have not forgotten that the CTD in the 1st gen trucks kept their heads above water for several years. I will keep my truck until it falls apart or becomes unsafe to drive--then I will put the engine in another truck body & "keep on trucking". :p

Here's a slightly different take on it - WHO CARES about market share? I'm going to talk in hypothetical numbers in this post because I don't know real numbers. Let's say for instance that Chevy is now selling a TON of Duramax equipped trucks and that last year was the first year of productiong - say 200,000 units. Now let's say that the total market for diesel powered pickups last year was 1,150,000 units and the year before was 1,000,000 units. Now let's say that Dodge sold 300,000 the year before and sold 310,000 this year. That would mean that Dodge had a 30% market share year before last and a 26. 9% market share this year - BUT they sold an additional 10,000 units. What that would mean is that Chevy is creating a new market and selling diesel trucks to those that wouldn't have otherwise bought them. As I said this is totally hypothetical but points out the fallacy of using things like "market share" to compare vehicles. I'd rather know the actual sales numbers year to year and compare it that way - anyone have those figures?

Since when does a manufacture want to make something that lasts? I'm amazed that we can get a Cummins at all! Since when does it make sense to them to give you a relaible long lasting product. The bottom of the profit/loss sheet always comes back to increaing that p number. We know there are several ways of doing that - but not many of them involve increasing the period between purchases. That's why the auto industry lives on the rental car fleets, and is increasingly trying to get us to accept leasing as a stable source of demand for new products.

Who sells more. . or builds more... We have a Cebby dealer here in the town I work in. . they have had some of the same D-max's sitting on the lot for a year now... the dodge dealer is at least selling his trucks...

The John Deere Engine. . Well. . I believe that we (John Deere) have a good engine for use in a Light-Med duty truck... but the Engine. . (like the Cummins) is heavy... (6. 8L 414cid I6. . not sure on the injection system. . could have been 3 or 4 different systems, one of the systems is the VP44 pump) GM put a weight limit on the engine they wanted. . The Deere engine could not make the weight limit... and Like some one posted above... Not going to use an Aluminum head... (I also heard a rumor about trany problems. . but I think that was more of a rumor. . and before the Allison. . )

I waited to buy a new truck. . because I wanted a Deere engine in my truck. . (every John Deere dealer in the US would have bought a fleet of these machines, too) but it didn't happen... No loss going to the Cummins for me... (but it would have been nice to hook my Lap-top up to my engine... )

Wait untill the new engine for the 03's is out... we are already using an injection system simialar to the system that will probably be used on the 03's. . but cummins will probably be using a Bosch system. . and the Deere's are using a Denso...

Later guys. .

Diesels

My first Diesel was a 1983 Volvo GLE inline 6 banger VW engine. Just like the V W Engine they put in the rabbit but slapped on a couple more cylinders. I loved it. That same engine is in delivery vans all over Europe… they go for 100’s of thousands of miles if they are cared for properly. If you ever overheat that V W engine (and warp the aluminum head) as a buddy and I did crossing the desert in the heat of summer … well It can be fixed but the price was so high I just scrapped it.

My second Diesel was a 1995 GMC Yukon half ton 2 door with the L56, I liked it, put 38,000 miles on it and sold it the a mechanical Engineer that worked for CAT Diesel. He still likes it and keeps in touch. He has over 100K miles on it and has had minimal problems. Also well cared for. I will say that L56 was a lesser Engine than My Cummins but it wasn’t a bad Engine in that half ton from my experience.

My third Diesel was my 1990 Dodge 4x4… I wish it had made sense to have kept it “and” still purchased my 4th and current Diesel. my 2002 CTD. I have friends who have Ford Diesels, you can’t tell me they don’t love those trucks, I drove a few, just didn’t do it for me, but I did like that 4 door short bed 350 4x4. “Just not enough”. I also drove 3 Duramax Trucks I liked some things about the GMC and Chevy’s, Just not enough.

I Have the right truck for me. No question! The Cummins just makes sense. But to quote a talk show host I listen to once in a while “The worst mistake you can make is to think anyone else thinks like you do” To bad for them.

I have both a Dodge and a Ford and have raced 4 Dodges, including my 01 HO(all were stock). The Ford smoked all 4 with ease. Don't get me wrong, I like my Dodge but for power, my '97 stroker has it all over it. The Ford pulls both my boats and my travel trailer much easier and gets better mileage to boot while doing so. It has also never been in the shop since new. And my first '84 6. 9 Ford, I sold to a friend of mine who still has it, has 410,000 on it with nothing major yet. Sure it has had some injectors and glow plugs replaced, but no big ticket items yet.

My Dodge rides better than my Ford, which was a delightful suprise. And, it cost less than a new stroker. I've had no problems with it yet and hope it stays that way.

The way I see it is all the diesel trucks out there as of now are pretty good hunks of iron, and each has it's own character and strong points. No need to think one is totally superior to the other, cuz it just ain't so. Just my $. 02

THancock,

Glad your phord is treating you well. I had a 96 powerstroke 5spd. Spent $10,000 on repairs in 36mo. My cummins gets approximately the same mpg. (cummins is an auto), but has 10-15% more power. And it starts immediately, every time. Also have a 2001 F350 powerstroke. No major problems so far, but it did have to get towed to the dealer once for a no start. I am surprised that your phord has more power than your cummins.

Good luck.

Both my Fords started after about only one crank turn. Never had any problem there. It really is no suprise to me that the Ford has more power, the engine is alot bigger. You know what they say, "there's no substitute for cubic inches" I'm getting the EZ Edge for the Dodge and figure that should put it on par, hopefully maybe more than on par. Hope ya have good luck with both your trucks.

My Dodge H. O. runs very strong. It has 410. rearend. I ran a PowerStroke that had a diablo chip in it and pulled him 1/2 a truck running stock. I have heard that engines vary in power from truck to truck. I must have gotten a strong one. It has a HX 40 turbo. I picked up a NAPA BHAF type air filter today and some 3/4 hose to extend the tube to the blow by bottle so I guess my first mod is the filter HaHa... ..... David

Next mod... ... exhaust& brake control:eek:

Wellll, there's more to power than cubic inches, but I know what you mean. In all fairness, I think my '96 Ford was a lemon (every brand makes them! I remain surprised though, that your 1997 has more power than your Dodge. Wasn't the 1997 the same 215 hp version as my 1996 powerstroke? My 2001 cummins has as much power as our 2001 powerstroke and a significant amount more than my 1996 Ford. You must have one of the better ones. Anyway, best of luck with it. If my kids get any bigger, I may have to consider a ford crew cab myself.

All I have to say is i could of bought any of the big three. . Ford chevy dodge... . Look at my sig... coudnt be happierOo. Oo. Oo.

Duramax lost out

When I bought my 2002 3500 QC 4x4 Dually in December it was after test driving a Chevy 2001 2500 QC 4x4 with DUramax and Allison transmission- the interior is excellent but Chevy does not have a car line and just wants to sell trucks- they do not have the ground clearance of the Dodges and even though the numbers are great in terms of HP and Torque it did not feel like the Dodge and was more expemsive than the Dodge 02! It was not worth it and I was leery of the new engine/transmission combo as opposed to the proven Cummins history- They are all good but the Dodge was greater value and feels like a truck.

Well Rack up Another One for the Maxi...

"LEAST LIKELY TO WIND UP IN MY DRIVEWAY!"

Deliver me a PROVEN ENGINE or prove yourself. I don't recall seeing one of those Zuki's in a piece of heavy machinery or a class 5 truck? Time will tell, in the interim, I'll stick with a proven winner.
