Duramax/ZF vs H.O. Cummins/NV5600

Any 'cat' experts out there?

On a quiet night

It appears the Duramax equipped GM's with the ZF six speeds are starting to hit the street.

Since the introduction of the Duramax it seems like all we here is how well it out-accelerates the competion (Cummins/Powerstroke) in the quarter mile and the 0-60 drag races.

I think everyone will agree that the Allison is a superior transmission. I think it also should be noted that the Allison makes up for what the Isuzu with its short stroke cannot do with raw power.

The test I would like to see is a 60-80 mph test with the 300 horse Duramax/ZF aluminum six speed against the 245 horse Cummins/NV cast iron six speed.

Both trucks would have to perform this test in 6th gear (overdrive). NO DOWNSHIFTING! If the 300 horse Duramax with its flat torque curve of 520 pounds stock is what GM says it is, it should easily win this test.

After the empty test is performed, load both beds with 3000 pounds and do it again.

The 245/505 Cummins against the300/520 Isuzu.

I will go on record right now and say the lesser rated Cummins H. O. wins hands down. If I am wrong, let the CROW feeding begin.

One last thing, so there is no doubt, equip the Dodge with 3. 55 gears against GM's 3. 73's.

Any takers?

Good point Tim, right now I do not have the spare change to purchase a Duramax/ZF. #ad

I am waiting for the local dealer to get Duramx/ZF combo in so I can try the 60-80 test.

The Duramax/Allison combo ran a 7-7. 5 second 60-80 by downshifting into 4th (direct) and revving right up past 3000 rpm.

Does anyone have any 60-80 times they can post with the H. O. engine and the 3. 55 gears?

Now I know why the dmax I drove felt so slow - my 60-80 is 4. 2 seconds in 5th (overdrive) #ad
!! What I want to know is how truck trend supposedly did a 8. 62 second 0-60 and I can only manage an 8. 6? Yet when I raced a dmax I blew him away and that was before I upgraded to the Powermax3. 2 shifts certainly slow my down in a 0-60 but I doubt it's slowing me down THAT much! I know there's no way the one I drove would do an 8. 6 - I think truck trend got a ringer. I'm looking forward to some 6 speed results too.

I'm considering approaching a couple of dealerships and asking if I can do a test between the PSD/DM/CTD. I would test the 0-60, 60-0 and 60-80 empty, and 0-60, 60-0 and 60-80 with a 5000lb trailer if they would let me.

I'll let you know if anyone will let me. #ad

Would be itneresting to compare the DMax and Cummins to the 2001 PSD 6-speed rating of 275/550.

The A/T PSD's are rated at 250/500 if I am not mistaken. I drove one at work yesterday, and I must say, it felt pretty good.

Im sure when you start haveing the well known cold weather relay problem , you wont think that they are OK . They are real picky when it comes to useing the right engine oil.
The injectors are cooled by the oil, and they score really easy with the wrong oil. . Ikky... .

I have also been waiting for this same comparison information, think the results would be very interesting.
