Durango owners??

I have a 2000 4. 7L Durango that is lacking in pulling power. Has anyone that has one chipped it? If so what kind of gains did you see, HP wise and mileage?



I regret not buying the 5. 9L but money was tight at the time and I got a good deal on this one. Any other helpful tips would be appreciated too.

Sorry man can't help with the 4. 7 power question, I got the 5. 9 but you may be able to get some help at the Durango Club or maybe the Dakota Club since they share the same engine.



How do you like the 4. 7 as far as fuel mileage and power running empty?

I can't speak for chipped towing or empty with a 4. 7 but, we sure like it running empty in it's stock form. We get 12-14mpg in town and 20mpg consistantly on the highway 70-72mph. The 4. 7 looks so much like a Mercedes 4. 6 I can't help but wonder.

Put a K&N airfilter in my wife's '01 Durango with a 4. 7. Didn't see a change in mileage like I did in my '94 GMC with a 5. 7. We're getting the same mileage in town as Steve M, but haven't been able to break 18 on the highway Any suggestions would be nice. I'll take a look at the Durango sites... thanks mikel.

Thanks for the replies about the mileage, but don't feel too bad about the 18 on the highway. We get about 10-12 around town and about 16 on the highway...



Oh well, I didn't buy it because it got good mileage

My wife has a '99 Durango (5. 2L) with the towing package. However, why would one tow with a Durango when we've got these Rams? I never have, anyway.

Off road.......

A friend and I built an off road trailer. It's great for all the camping gear on 4X outings. In San Diego you have to go over some minor mountains to get to the desert though. And that's where most of the 4X stuff happens.



The trailer ain't too heavy but loaded makes it hard to pull with the Dango. That's why I was curious about the HP chip. That and I'm sure the Kalifornia smog laws further deplete it of power, that's why we bought the 02 Ram in Texas.

This pic is when we first finished. It has a roof mounted tent now and set ups for water tanks. I provided the labor and my friend bought the stuff (Technically it's his trailer ). Big bucks for that aluminum box and the roof mount tent.

on the wifes 02 model we found a special order that was not picked up. It was ordered with the 3. 92 gears. she averages 15 around town and has gotten as good as 20 on the hwy. Truck accelerates great, no luging around town and is fun to drive. I think that attributes to the good mileage around town.

Sweet looking trailer Big White Beast! I find it hard to believe that the Durango won't handle it very well (even off-road and heavy). Does it have the problems even in 4LO? I've seen people towing some very large loads with Durango's. My wife's Durango also has the 3. 92 gears but her mileage really suffers (around 13mpg). I'm sure that the Kalifornia smog doesn't help.

The bottom line is.............

I'm spoiled! After towing with the Ram's nothing seems to compare.



The Dango is fine when out 4 wheeling. It's getting to the desert and back through the mountains that it seems to lug along. The power band seems really narrow and at the top of the RPM range. The 3:55 axle ratio doesn't help. Great doing 80 but not for power.



Been so busy at work I haven't had time to call the manufacturer and get more details on the box. I'll let you know when I do find something out.
