I run a K&N drop in and will be getting a oil analysis in 1,000km. I will post the results as I have never done a oil analysis before. I have checked my intake tube and never found anything.

Update on my new Nano

I originally posted my issue with a white or ok maybe light blue "little crinkly fiber" looking stuff coating the intake tube with my original Nano. Amsoil contacted me and ask that I send in the filter. They returned a new filter with results of all is well with the old filter. Just as I suspected, this stuff came off the first time I started the engine and there wasn't any left on the filter to come off when tested. Believe me this was not dust getting around the seal. However, Amsoil was right up to the line in wanting to take care of me and see to it I was happy. Yesterday with 3k on the new filter there was not a speck in the intake tube. The cleanliness of the filter catch side did surprise me though, I expected more road grim crud. I'm not concern however because I've started plugging the cold air intake with a soft foam ball in nasty weather, slushy winter roads coats a paper with nasty stuff in 6K and I'm trying to extend the Nano life. I do now know something is different between the new and the old, perhaps there was a bad run or some issue with the paper, who knows. However I think Amsoil is a super company with a history of super products and now excellent service in my opinion. It will take more miles and especially filter cleaning to decide if I really like the Nano. Does anyone know where a prefilter or sock might be found for the stock dimension air filter? Or access to material I could adapt to the cold air intake tube? Suggestions would be greatly appreciated. tks in advance... . John

I'm using the PG7 drop-in with factory box on mine. I'd hope it does seal adequately as it take a lot of effort to close the cover. Is anybody else experiencing this?

I know this is a old thread, but yea I have a hard time getting the lid back on the box. At this time I have a stock filter in my air box.

After I replaced the nano with a stock element, I decided to try a Pro-guard 7. I noticed the same appearance to inside of the CBT as with the nano after using the stock element. Still could be a seal issue or it may just be the appearance of the tube. I'll be sending a UOA with the next change (1st since the Pro-guard) and I'll report. I was going to send one with the nano after I took it out, but I spilled it on the garage floor.

When I change my stock air filter, I spread a light coating of vaseline on the bottom and top edge of the filter gasket ; This lets the filter and box and cover "slip around a little bit while seating the filter and cover, and prevents pinching the gasket. Finally, the petroleum jelly makes a final seal beteween the soft gasket and hard plastic to prevent ANY dust from seeping in. An old mechanic taught me this years ago and I think it is still a relevant tip!!!

Hello to ALL, I'm a newbie owner just having bought a Creampuff STOCK 2003 H. O. /6spd.

I have a contact at DODGE/Cummins (in Detroit) who has been advisng me... ... ...

"... . not to be biased, but the Mopar one is generally better than the aftermarket ones because it has a woven media pre-filter glued to the pleats and it has more pleats than most aftermarket ones. Don't trust that little filter minder on top of the airbox to be super accurate - it's good practice to periodically check the air filter regardless of what the filter minder says. Also - whatever you do, DO NOT put one of those K&N or similar cotton gauze filters on a Cummins unless you want to dust out the turbo and the piston rings - I mean that in all seriousness... just don't do it... . a stock air filter is designed to have a certain amount of restriction in the name of protecting the engine. We've actually tested most of the aftermarket ones and the Mopar one has the most pleats, the thickest pre-filter and the thickest wire mesh on the clean side. "

Having said that I'd like to read/learn more about the AFE/P-7

Please explain, advise and go slow... ... ... .

Hope to become friendly with ALL of you,

Thanks,

Your comments sums up the golden question for air filters. Is there a performance filter that can flow more air without sacrificing filtering ability? Cummins will say don't do anything and at stock(ish) power I'd agree. But if you gonna play you'll need more air. I think few won't argue a K&N will not filter well enough. But there are others. The AMSoil Nano element seems to fit the bill, but this post was to discuss that issue. The Pro- G 7 is a element similar to K&N in that it is oiled but it isn't a "gauze" type per say. What you read will tell you it's good, but we'll see. I'm gonna do some UOAs and make sure. Another way to increase a filter's performance without changing the media is to increase surface area. Hence the BHAFs. These can be put in a third gen but I like the stock air box with a CBT. There are some cone elements for the stock air box (which is what I'm currently running) but they are "performance" media. I really which there was cone drop in paper element for the 3rd gen. I'd use that and not look back.

dust

I to had dust for the first time in the intake tube with a nano filter. I'm not trying to bash I just want to say what happened for me. I have stock air box with psm mod and cool hose. I originally put in a pg7 and never had any dust in the tube, then when the nanos came out I ordered one and ran it for a short time about 5,000 miles, and bam dust in the tube for the first time.

Nano is now gone. Just my experience.

i know what we all need... ... ... ... ... . an OIL BATH FILTER! just like on my 48 plym... that thing filters everything!

Hey all, just got my oil analysis back. I had 10,231km on the oil, have the K&N drop in filter. The PPM of Silicon was '3' I have cleaned the filter maybe 3 times at the most, have 70,000km on truck. Around 55,000km have been using K&N.

Just food for thought.

Looking for the dust source caused me to put a film of oil around the stock box seals on three different company trucks. In all three the leak was just under and to the left of the outlet leaving the airbox. I made an additional clip out of spring steel and stopped it. Dodge was at the time, refusing to warranty turbos if they were showing any dirt contamination.

Just add my 2cts worth on filters. Have had a K&n since truck was new. As of today truck has 498,598 kms (309,813k). Filter has been serviced every 50,000 k. There has never been dust in the intake. It uses no oil between changes every 6000k,oil filters Fleetguard. I believe how the service is done is what makes the difference,I clean the filter using the K&N cleaner and put in tub of warm water allowed to soak for several hours. Removed and laid out to dry for 24 hours. K&N oil sprayed on top to bottom and side to side. Filter laid on clean paper towels overnight. Second coat of oil applied and left for 12 hours. On installing clean the filter box apply DC -4 compound around the filter gasket and around recess where filter sits. This sounds like a lot of work ,and it is,however it seems to pay off. Engine is extremely clean when valve cover is removed to do valve adjustment. This engine has 53 block and original vp-44. I know many do not approve of the K&N filter ,I can only relate my own expierence and not trying to convince anyone else. Happy Trails.
