To Sell or not to Sell 01 for a 97?

Bought an Orange diesel and ... lost it...

Ok here's the story. My best friend's brother in law went to Phoenix, with his father in law( also my best friends father in law) to buy a flord powerjoke. The brother in law called me saturday night and asked whether or not they should buy the flord. Now Phoenix is 600 miles from here and they went there just to buy this truck off ebay. So, why did he call me? He wanted my advice on white smoke, cause this truck was blowing white smoke. I said, just walk away, you don't want it, it's bad and expensive to fix white smoke. They didn't listen. So of course I get a phone call sunday night. "We made it home, but it died twice on the way, i'm taking it to the ford dealer tuesday". He called me today, the engine is dusted. Someone, at some point ran it without an air filter. Total for an overhaul on this powerSMOKE? $11,000! They only paid $14,000 for the whole truck! I said "did you get a warranty from the used car lot"? "Nope". DOH! Does anyone know if these engines have liners, or do you have to bore them out? Does this O/H price seem high? Hell you can get a series 60 overhauled for 11,000 bucks. After getting off the phone with him today I went out, pulled my BHAF off, shook the dust out, then got the shop vac and vacuumed the filter out and made sure the fittings were all tight. Just thought I'd share that with you guys. Diesels don't like dirt.

I have a few relatives and friends with powerjokes. One friend lost his motor cuz of this. Supposedly, without frequent air filter changes, like every oil change, the motor somehow sucks air from around the filter. At least thats what I was told.

you can buy a reman cheaper than that, the labor is going to kill him to R & R the engine they are a PIA to pull if he was in ohio i could hook him up pretty good.

If you want to hear about ford air filter problems talk to Bob from Mr Bobs distributing he services a large farm fleet. They had MANY engine failures till they changed over to AFE filter systems.

I don't care what engine it is, cummins, powerjoke or the durajunk. If it blows white smoke ALL the time, don't freakin buy it. I just don't get some people.

Have him check around. If he is mechanically inclined, he can do the work and get the motor done consderably cheaper. He should check into some of the diesel vendors on this sight and over on www.thedieselstop.com . He can get a rebuilt motor built to better specs cheaper than the dealer will give a stock motor

Ford had a problem with airfilter box designs on the early superduties. My neighbor got his upgraded to the new severe duty style. Apparently its ok to suck dirt if you are only in regular duty? They soaked him a few hundred bucks for the filter but at least it seals up ok.

As for an $11k repair bill... SWAP IN A 12V it will cost less in the long run.

I just looked around to see what a long block cost and found rebuilt long blocks for $3900. They also had emission test engines, complete with less than 8,000 miles for $5900.

I'd say do it themselves, or price around at the least. I know a guy that had a shop put in a new long block in his 96 powerstroke after he had tried fixing it himself. He took the truck in with the engine in the back of the truck with boxes of parts. Still only cost him about $4500. It doesn't take much labor to swap an engine out, two days max by any shop that does them regularly.

Well I finally heard back from him today. Turns out the used car dealer they bought it from sells on ebay and didn't want a bad feedback, so they're taking the truck back. I don't know how they're going to get it back there, but they say they're going to take it back. What a waste of time and money. Why they bought it, I have NO idea.
