HI all, had my truck dynoed at cummins for low power complaint, truck dynoed 171 HP at rear wheels DC says that is correct because they measure fly wheel at 215 HP. My question is, is this correct or are they trying to avoid fixing my problem. Any hard proof or evidence you can show me that this is wrong would be much appreciated since i plan on persueing this further. If there are any lawyers reading this and can help please e-mail me, i have had my truck back to dealer many times and they cannot fix the problem (its time to come out swinging). If the numbers are right then i will shut up and live with the low power and poor mileage. I am so pissed off i am at the point this whole issue is starting to cause me health problems. Regards, Ron

<font color=blue>First off every dyno is gonna read differently. It all depends on how it is calibrated. Secondly you have the auto transmission which is gonna take away some of the HP as well as the 4x4 drivetrain.

If you were orginally rated at 215hp at the flywheel then you are right at the "common" 20% loss for drivetrain.

I went thru this a year ago, DC says that if your power is within 20% of advertised HP ,after deducting 20% for drivetrain loss, you are doing fine,no problem. Fuel mileage according to DC should be 12 to 17 depending on 4X4 ,duallies ,QC , auto , A/C ,and probably CD player. This was for the 99 model year.

MY $00. 015¢ , get a GOOD lawyer or BOMB.

Ron,

If you have not already done this, maybe you can find someone close to you with a similair truck. You two could then do a controoled test to determine if your truck is running up to snuff.

Ron...
Question, Does the truck seem real sluggish out of the hole? How about at highway speeds? Does it seem to wake up as the RPM's increase? I had the now infamous PCM reflash recall done on my truck when it was nearly new. Lost all kinds of power. Especially out of the hole. Left turns at a signal were getting deadly. The truck just would not move. After accelerating a bit it seemed to wake up and take off. Also MPG went way south. Went back to the dealer with this complaint and they did a second reflash that cured the problem. This was some time ago though.

Sorry to hear that the truck is not up to specs.

Most new vehicle horsepower numbers would be considered at the flywheel (or flexplate with the automatic) and you normally expect up to (and sometimes more) 20% 'drivetrain' losses. The automatic and transfer case both tend to be less efficient than a standard trans. Not implying 'not as good' jus more complicated with more parts so more loss of power to the rear wheels.

The mileage part is what I think you should pursue. Your dyno'd 171 hp is 79. 53% of the rated horsepower of 215. I don't think any lawyer is going to argue 0. 47% in court. That's well within the accuracy (or inaccuracy) of the chassis dyno.

I'm not a lawyer but a mechanical engineer so trust me on the numbers and use a grain of salt with the 'legal' advice.

My new 95 stick was dissapointing. I complained to my dealer twice with no help... "it drives fine to me" they said. I went in ranting the third time with a tale of being blown away by a Powerstroke with a much larger trailer than mine... and THAT'S why I bought a damn Dodge: to pull a trailer at highway speeds! The dealer immediately wrote up an R. O. , sent me to a Bosch pump service shop where my pump was "recalibrated" and engine timing adjusted. In the end, the truck was hugely better, the dealer got its money back from Chrysler, and everyone was happy! I did ask the shop about cost (as in if I was writing a check for it). $100 to take the pump off, $100 to put the pump back on, and $125 on the bench. Would have been the BEST $325 I could have spent!! Good luck!

Sounds like there's somebody in the woodpile to me!
