I have owned several diesels but have never had the chance to dyno one. Well I do now and was wondering what I should know before doing it. Such as gear selection and such. Just basic knowledge about the process and procedure for operation.

Sorry I would help you if I could but dont know much about dyno's. So here is my recommendation strap the truck down good. ;)

Thanks, that's about the extent of my knowledge also. I am pretty good at the old redneck deal "hey watch this"

Generaly ther's nothing YOU do other than pay the man. They pull it on, they strap it down, they run it through the gears and run the dyno. This has been my experience at many events. Some cases I've seen operators allow people to run their own trucks on the dyno but these were isolated situations. My experience is also in the "group" setting. Never been to one solo. If you are waiting your turn you'll want to drive around a bit to warm it up before your turn comes up so they're not loading up a cold engine.

Hope this helps

Dyno testing is very informative and helps you determine whether modifications made any difference in the power curve. If you are using an inertia dyno like the Dynojet, you want to be in either high gear (1:1) or overdrive, and stay in the same gear for the entire run. Inertia dyno runs are very short, a matter of seconds. You might want to open the hood to get more cool air to the engine, and perhaps have a big fan in front of the truck—these things are optional. I first discussed dyno testing in Issue 23.

another side note...

if it is an automatic, make sure that the tc is in full lockup... the other hard part is if the vehicle has any speed/rpm limiters on it... i just dynoed my buddy's brand new duramax, and that's what i kept running into, in 5th gear locked up, i would hit the rev limiter before what i felt would be a good torque curve, but it 6th gear locked up, i hit the speed limiter. i've dynoed my 24 valves too many times for me to count, and that's easy, but anything with these limiters i have found it difficult.
