Mild Bombing Session

Hey guys I think, I may be able to get Doug S. to bring his 6v53 Detroit drag truck to the dyno. . But I need some help though, he estimates the engine makes about 1400ftlbs at the engine. . BUT through some mathematical calculation of his he figures the torque applied to the ground is some where around 15,000ftlbs . So he's afraid that he may break the dyno... . ha . Now I bet you could figure some math calculation to get a figure like that, but if you applied the same calculation figure to everybody else, they would also be in the thousands . . So I'm disregarding that. . There is no way his truck is getting 15,000 ftlbs at the wheels. . maybe 1400ftlbs at the wheel. And I don't think he will break the dyno... I just want to see what it will actually do on the dyno. Does anyone know what the max hp and torque mikes dyno will register? and does anyone know of a calculation that will amplify torque as its multiplied through the drive line to the wheels ?. . I think I have heard of one before, and I will have to check out some of the "auto" math books. I thought normally a engines hp and torque are highest at the engine and a loss in hp and torque is expected through the drive line. . etc

Any how I just need to figure it out, so that he gets his truck on the dyno ha. I think the beer and bbq following at the state park will work the best!!

Deo, I'm no expert, but I do know a loss of about 20% can reasonably be expected as power is transfered through the drive train. This was bourne out the first time I dynoed. Values came out at about 80% of Dodge/Cummin's claimed flywheel horsepower.

If you think about it, and you could get more horsepower at the wheels than at the engine, you could bleed some off, and feet it back through the drivetrain to make more. Talk about fuel efficient!

But I just realized you haven't mentioned power, but are talking about torque, which is rotational force. The same losses to friction apply, of course, but in a frictionless world, there is no way to mechanically make more force out of an existing force. A foot pound would only move one pound one foot, You can gear it so it will move 5lb 1/5 of a foot, or 1,000lb

. 001 feet, but it still is the same.

Now if he neglected to mention those solid rocket boosters... that's another matter.

What ever happened to Ted Jennaty's new dyno he was getting. I thought it was going to be up and running by last August?

The last I heard was that the new building is being built on wet lands, so it has been caught up in planning and zoning. The dyno and the building are sitting there under tarps behind his building. I think the other problem was all the snow and cold weather we had this winter. This was about two months ago. Don't know what is happening now

dyno

Guys I know for a fact Mikes dyno stops at 1200 ftlbs of torque and 739 h. p last year when ted kobi did some nitrous testing in his 01 Mikee was supposed to get the software upgrade to 1800 ftlbs but not sure i will be down doing some testing this week with him and i will let you know.

Deo:

I think it's safe to say that Doug's truck will be able to dyno without a problem.

Even if Mike's dyno stops reading at 1200 (or 1800 if he gets the new software... ) it isn't going to break the dyno... it just won't read any higher.

He won't be able to max out the HP reading - Mike has had 8-second 1/4 mile drag cars on his dyno... . 1200hp at the wheels. It'll be a while before a Detroit 6V-53 makes it to 1200rwhp.

Call him up and tell him it's all set for him to attend the dyno.

With all due respect... last I knew... . the barbeque plans are still not set in stone - stay tuned.

Well, I can't make the 17th, but I have been wanting to dyno since November, so I may go on my own, maybe a few of us can go together in the original date? Any takers, I'll call Scott to get the info.

Hey Mark... ... ... since you and Fred and a couple others can't go on the 17th, I'll probably go with you guys on the 10th.

Let me know what's up.

I'll call Scott today "Tuesday" and see if we can set it up for a small group on the 10th. Might have a mustang guy looking to do some tuning also.

HEYBOSS

I'm right here... ... Waiting The Findings:rolleyes: of wha't sup for next weekend... ... ... ... ... ... . are we going, aren't we going, who's going, what's happening, what time, what order, what, what what:confused: :D

I spoke to Scott yesterday and it looks like Mike needs at least 5 or six definates to set aside that kind of time on a Saturday. Doesn't look like there will be enough, and turns out I won't be able to make that day either. Mike is real busy on the weekends this time of year with all the drag racers tuning their rides. I will probably go up there on my own on a weekday.

Someone break it to him gently, will you?
