wonder how much less an auto is do to HP losses through the transmission?

Man you guys make me feel bad. I thnk I may have dyno'd the lowest of anyone with a 3rd generation. Mine HO only dyno'd 236hp and 440 tq

The test was run in 5th gear. I assume the numbers would be higher in sixth.

Why? Does the engine generate more horsepower when measured in a higher gear?

At that power level, it would be similar or lower in 6th.



Above 375hp or so, it will be higher in 6th.

Given similar load vs RPM, I would expect 5th gear to produce slightly more power because the transmission is direct dirve (fewer gears spinning).

My numbers were close to that..... 275HP and 508ft# on pure stock and 30,000 miles. Mustang dyno w/ 6,000 lb load

5th vs 6th

My understanding is that with 5th gear engaged the transmission is transmitting a 1:1 ratio of power from the engine to the rear wheels. When 6th gear (overdrive) is engaged the transmission is amplifying the power from the engine to the rear wheels.



Also, the more mileage on the engine the greater the hp/torque. A new "600" ran on the same dyno with only 2000 miles on it and it faired 240hp and 460ft/lbs.

Not exactly, you only make the wheels go faster, no HP gain.



The reason higher HP trucks do a little better in 6th is because it takes longer to accelerate the rollers and gives more time for the big turbos spool before getting into the peak HP band.



When I dynoed my truck I did 5th and 6th and there was only a 0. 1 HP difference.

I agree; but that extra magical horsepower gained in 5th would have sounded better at the bar after a few beers.

Same day/dyno mine did 260/520. So much for the HP increase w/Airaid intake syst



woohoo i did get 10 ft lbs.

I installed the proguard 7 and dynoed again with an increase of 7ft/lbs. I will install the torque tube and dyno one last time to see if there are any improvements.
