Yaaaa... exactly what Bob B said.....

Those numbers, along with nascar marks are pretty darn decent... .

All that from a self tuned/fiddled VE. Now I know you can get a custom built VE, but still, that's big bucks I would think... .

Anyone breaking 300 RWHP is doing darn good with our 1st gens.

Remeber when even getting close to 300 was considered an act of god... ... ;) :D

Bob.

Bob you're right about a built VE - I paid $1,200. 00 US installed and timed for mine. I have to say that I am very happy with mine. I also think that I have maxed out my PWs at 258 RWHP. I feel that they have given me 100 RWHP over what they are rated at and that's not too bad. I've got Lenny at Dyno-mite Diesel building me a set of DD3+'s and I'm hoping to get at or near 300 RWHP with them. After I put them in I am going to try to dyno over in Idaho on 6/7/03 without any other changes with the possible exception of a smoke adjustment. Right now I am working on setting and testing my wastegate to get peak boost out of my 14cm turbo.

Bob

sgriffing,

I've got a 5 speed. Not sure about autos, but I hear a lot of good things about DTT transmissions and converters. But, opinions about transmissions are like belly buttons, everybody has their own.

Bob Beauchaine,

Let us know how the DD3's work out for you. Before and after numbers would be interesting.

Mike

Yes, pertinent facts would be:

Run duration (in seconds)

Max HP

Max RPM

Max Tq.

Max pyro (EGT's)

Max boost

Gear used (should be 1:1)

That should be a good baseline stat list.

Bob.

Direct is best on a load test dyno. If you run on a dynojet, direct gear may not give you enough load to properly spool your turbo. The dynojets also seem to like speed.

Sean

The test was on Mike Dez's DynoJet... . and I didn't get the feeling that I was loaded up to the max. I wasn't paying enough attention to the boost gage to remember what I saw as max, but the engine just didn't sound or feel loaded... but it was my first dyno experience...

kind of like the first trip to Yankee stadium... I don't recall the score, but there was this young woman in the stands behind me... .

oh never mind!;)

Jay

Mike,

Conratulations! That is super! Another 1st gener over 300! I bet with those numbers your old 92 will surprise a lot of the newer CTD and other diesels on the road!:D :D

Great job, Mike. You should be proud of the "self tuned" part.

What was it we used to hear so much - about a maximum of 300 HP for our VE pumps?? All you have to do is tell people something can't be done, and someone will step up and make it happen. ;)

Jay,

I've dynoed on Mike Dez's dyno twice. Both times I was about 4 psi shy of what I would get on the street. It didn't matter if I was in 4th or 5th. I never saw over 900* on the pyro either.

The numbers I'm seeing people post are incredible. I am curious as to what the pyro says. I would rather have the horsepower I can use on the hills with a trailer instead of just leaving it on the dyno.

As always, great information.

I am happy to say that I have done all of the wrenching on my rig to get it to where it is now. With the exception of an occasional helping had to hold a flashlight, hand me tools, or do some welding/fitting of the exhaust. But to be completely honest, my rig probably wouldn't be on the level it is today if it weren’t for the help of a few people along the way. When I first started out I talked to a few local people about the basic tuning of the VE injection pump. Once I started looking for more information on the computer I found a whole other world of information. I'm sure most everyone has seen the instructions on Fritz's Ram Page for making adjustments. The TDR has also been a great recourse. Along with other Dodge diesel sites such as the DTR. There are many knowledgeable people who are willing to help. Its people like nascar mark, and other members, who "set the bar" and give some hints when needed. I had actually forgotten about one little trick I was told about a while ago until a day or so after the dyno run. Oh well. I really enjoy spending an afternoon working on some different ideas, or just tinkering with a "training aid" pump so see how it works. Being in the field of diesel technology as helped a lot too. It's good to have some friendly competition out there, which brings out some new ideas and defines what works, and what doesn’t. It seems like first gens have really make some progress lately. Keep it up guys! :)

hey Mike,

You should have came down to May Madness and shown some of those 2nd gens up. I went out there today and no 1st gens have dyno'd yet at all. I'm thinking about hopping on there and showing those guys what a real truck sounds like. :D I need to do a little tuning on the pump first though. I haven't even messed with my fuel screw yet after i put those 60 horse injectors in. If i do dyno i'll try to make everyone proud.

Chris

Chris,

I would have really liked to go to May Madness. Too bad it's about 25 hours to 'Vegas for me. So, did you dyno? I'm sure it was a great time.

Mike

Mike,

i dyno'd 206 hp. The dyno didn't give a torque reading so i'm gonna have to get dyno'd again sometime. I think i'm doing pretty good for injectors, turbo housing and turning up my pump.

Chris

Chris

That's pretty good for your first run. Were you able to set the timing on your pump? I made a 6 point to get to that top nut if you didn't - we can set it next time your up if needed. The injectors you've got in are almost deffinitely PW's (Bosch 185's) especially with those numbers.
