Can someone give me the tips to connecting BD's 5speed Switch to a Jacaobs E-Brake?

Does the Ebrake wiring harness need to be installed?

This will be a brand new E-brake going on a 2001 ETH.

Going to have a Cummins Shop install the Ebrake. Will add the Switch afterwords. Just wondering if I can have the C-Shop skip Ebrake switch install or maybe just install the BD Switch instead.

The Jacobs E-brake instructions call for a hole in the lower part of the dash for a toggle switch. DON'T cut the hole!

You should install the harness from Jacobs.

You could have the shop install everything, leaving the switch to flop around, and then install the BD switch yourself. You could also have the shop install the BD switch initially. I installed the Jacobs provided toggle switch (not through the dash though) and then changed over to a two-speed axle switch on the shift lever. I recommend this method.

I'll e-mail you the wiring diagram. It will be a lot easier to discuss if you have the diagram in front of you.

Just installed one of the BD switches this afternoon. MikeR came over and helped, actually doing most of it. We removed the shift lever, drilled a hole at top and bottom(well placed!) and ran the wires thru the shifter to make it look cleaner. I have had the e brake for coming up on 2 years, so I already had the switch hole in the dash.

We cut the appropriate wire, and then ran one from the new BD switch to each end of it. Done!

This switch from BD is very heavy duty, and has a nice look to it.

PS: Hint: the green wire ain't the right wire! Ouch! Only ones left are yellow, white and black. White and black are power to the light, and ground.

Green is ground.

White is key-on 12 volts for toggle switch indicator lamp.

Black is 12 volt signal from pin 20 of ECM.

Yellow goes to vacuum solenoid.

Thomas... thanks for identifying which wires were which. When we cut the green wire, we were sure it was the right one! Ooops.

Thanks for the diagram Thomas... I wonder if just hooking the BD switch wires to the Yellow and Red(black after connector) ones coming into the cab and not ever hooking up the Ebrake switch?

Rob>>> Tell me more about drilling the shift lever. Describe well placed? Also, any tips on running the wires through the shift boot and into the dash?

Thomas, thanks for trying the e-mail. Don't know why it wouldn't take. I guess it's gotta be trash mail for it to accept something that size #ad
Anyhow it looks pretty straight forward so I'll just print this out. Rob, is the shifter pretty easy to take off to drill the holes? Sounds like a clean setup. Thanks guys. Doug

Here is what we did to drill the shifter. . (my first!)

Position the switch on the shifter where you want it. Mark this spot with some masking tape or something.

Remove the switch from the shifter, and gently lift the edges of the shift boot, you will see 6 screws... remove these. The boot has a metal tab on the side closest to the seat, so you need to kind of push it rearward, pop the front of the boot loose, then pull forward. Gently slide the boot up the shifter, and you will see a nut on the bottom of it. Loosen this nut and the shifter will unscrew and pull out.
We ran the 2 wires from the switch out the side of the protective rubber boot on it, instead of the bottom, to try to clean it up a bit. With this in mind, from here, you can mark and drill the top hole. I used as small a bit as would accomodate the two wires.
Drilling the bottom hole, going up a size in bits would be a good thing, cause you have to fish the two wires out. When drilling this hole, note that the bottom of the shifter is not hollow! I drilled on the sloped transition of the shifter... it really only needs to be below the level of the reinstalled shifter boot. From here you can feed the wires forward, under the edge of the shifter console, straight under the dash.
Now connect the two wires to the YELLOW wire, and you are done with the new switch!

Long, but hopefully useful! MikeR, did I leave anything out?

Thanks again Thomas for the download. Its on the computer but me and it (the computer) aren't seeing eye to eye. I'm not computer literate at all and the dang thing won't let me read it. Will keep trying till I figure it out or pull the plug on the dang thing. #ad

You got it all in there,Rob. Hey,did I ever show you that I also put a light bulb in the shift knob to light up the shift pattern? That was a PITA!

MikeR... I will have to check that out! Could put a green bulb to match your dash lights. Did ya notice I got the BD switch with a knob to match my Ram? Bright red! LOL.

Rob,

Any pictures of that shifter install? Never looked at the shift lever that close, I thought it was solid. It must be hollow??

The shift lever is hollow... sort of! It is thicker than you would think, but is hollow most of the way. At the bottom, under the rubber shift boot, it slopes up to a bigger diameter size. Somewhere farther than half way up this slope, it becomes solid. At least mine was... 99 Ram 3500, six spd.

Haven't you memorized the shift pattern by now Mike? #ad

..... nope, just a chrome one. #ad

On second thought Mike, I guess the lighted shifter knob goes well with your surfer "gas" pedal. #ad
