Hey John, just curious whether you were still working on pictures of your truck? I'm still interested in seeing the mudflaps. Not trying to rush you by any means, just needing to get my rocker panels ordered and just thought it might save me a few coins in shipping to order flaps at the same time. Thanks alot, and again I know your probably busy, so just wondering if it was still in the works.

X-10, I'm sorry, Rob and I were going to do that this past weekend however, I got busy on other projects instead (i. e. , polishing the stupid Banks High-Ram lettering... STILL!), and he was not feeling too well.

FYI BIG BOB, no, I didn't get it washed yet either. #ad
(I'm letting the paint properly age... just like a fine wine #ad
).

Soon!

Any pictures of that shifter install? Never looked at the shift lever that close, I thought it was solid. It must be hollow??

Here are two pics of the new switch... there are many ways to do this!

The wires you see are not for the switch... its my cellphone and CB...

Thomas, can you E-mail me one also ? Thanks.
Mike R can you do the same thing to a 96 ? Can you send me the directions for a 96 or are they the same ? Any help on the shifter switch would be great #ad
Thanks

Butch

ROCKYMNT,

It's been along time since I've looked at a 94-97 style shift lever with the shift knob off,so I don't know if it's possible with those or not. The easiest way to find out... carefully pry the 1-2-3-4-5 pattern out of the shift knob and you can see the end of the shift lever. If it looks hollow, then get a wire coat hanger and straighten it out and shove it down the hole to see how far down it is hollow. You want it hollow to go deep enough to be able to drill a hole underneath the shift boot.

Look at the picture Rob has of the switch. The hole at the top of the lever is drilled 1/8th" below the aluminum bracket,so make sure the switch is at the level and angle where you want it before drilling. Also the wires no longer exit the bottom the the switchs' boot. I cut a small hole in the side at the same level as the hole drilled in the lever. I used speaker wire for Rob's and mine's trucks.

Nice pics Rob. Looks like you guys do some great work. The hidden wires make it look like it came from the factory that way.

John, I figured you got busy. Whenever you get a chance.

Where abouts is Enumclaw at? I spent a year in dry-dock in Bremerton several years back and just wondered if it was anywhere around there. Doug

X-10, Enumclaw, is located SE of Seattle, NE of Tacoma in the foothills of the Cascade mountain range. It's referred to as the Gateway to Mt. Rainier (which is SE of us).

Rob and I discussed the pic yesterday... we'll get on it.

Nice installation Rob and Mike!

Got new BD Switch but NO mount to attach to gear shifter.

Are you guys building your own?

Is this something that has to be ordered seperate?

JJW... the switch from BD comes with the mount... if you did not get one, call them. Their phone number is in the TDR Links.

I finally got a pic of my switch. So you guys can get a better view of how I route the wires, look at the gap between the lever and switch just below the switch bracket, and you'll barely see the wires.

Does any one know if the 96 has a hollow shifter ? If not I guess I will run the wires down the outside of the shifter. #ad

Orrrr if someone has a better idea !
Mike, is that the switch holder that comes with the B&D switch ?

Kevin: The trucks we are adding EBrakes to are Govt. trucks. I watched the install and I certainly could have done the work myself, but when it is not your truck, it is nice to just take it to whoever is responsible for potential problems.

Had a nice visit with Cummins Shop while waiting.

Please forgive me, but I'm just a little (okay, maybe a lot #ad
) confused. Larry's photo shows what appears to be a large cable at the BOTTOM of the BD switch. The earlier photos show a much smaller wire protruding from the side of the switch which is being threaded down inside the shifter. Different switches or am I missing something? Please clear my mind before I have to take drastic measures!

TIA,

David

ROCKYMNT,
The bracket I have is not from BD. I went to a big rig supply house and bought the smallest bracket could find. Turns out the braket was still too big for my shift lever, and it was late at night when I was installing it,so I re-bent and trimmed(re:grinding wheel) as necessary to get it to fit. The switch is just a plain 'ol 2speed axle switch you can get just about anywhere. If I was to do it again,I'd buy the BD kit.

David W. ,
For some reason BD (and GM) uses a thick cable with lots of insulation(only two wires!) for their switch. The wire I used is just about the same gauge as the Jacobs wiring. I think they made it that way so things falling on the cable or rubbing on it don't easily cut into it. The black casing on the switch is just made of rubber, and I cut a small square hole in the side.

-Mike

To echo MikeR's comments:

The switch itself is available many places—I've seen it at NAPA and purchased mine, along with a bracket, from a heavy-duty driveline machine shop. My experience with the bracket was that it was too small. The bracket is extremely hard spring steel. I spent some time selectively annealing a portion of the bracket to get it to fit over the shift lever. Others on this board have mentiioned making their own bracket.

You can attach whatever wires you wish to the switch. The E-brake by Jacobs wiring diagram shows . 83 amp as the current draw of the vacuum solenoid—not a need for large guage wire. I ran small black wires from the base of the switch, down the lever and into the boot. They're hardly an esthetic issue.
