I drove a 03 today with an exhaust brake while I was getting my truck serviced at the dealer. I had never been around one to tell how good they work. I must say I think that is a good investment to have. The only thing I didn't like is that it sounded like an air leak while it was activated. All you could hear was air. Is it supposed to sound like this? My personal truck is straight piped, and I was wondering if it would sound more like a big rig when the brake activates or would it be more of an air leaking sound. Thanks alot.

I had a Rambrake from Jacobs ebrake on my 96 and the only sound that I heard was a clicking when it would be activated. It would flutter at times which I just had to toon out. I believe in ebrakes. Have a great day.

My fire company's Rescue has a Cummins ISC with an exhaust brake and it makes a huge rushing air sound when activated. Kind of like someone shoved a potato in the exhaust and plugged it up. Which I guess is kinda how it works!

A real jake brake on a big truck has a mechanism on each valve that keeps it closed that is why they sound the way that they do. . You will not get that sound out of a dodge cummins...

That is cool bkaiser be safe brother...

a real jake brake on a larger diesel engine is a compression release brake. they open the exhaust valve just before TDC on the compression stroke [most use the injector rocker assembly to do that - easy to do with unit injectors] the release of the pressure [±400psi] is what causes the jake brake sound... so it gets resistance on compression stroke, and it gets resistance on "power" stroke with the engine drawing a vacuum in that cylinder before the exhaust opens up.
