Wiring fire

Does anyone know the wires on the Cummins
E Brake to tap into to put a on/off switch
on the gear shift. There only four wires on the factory switch I think. It is almost to
impossabe to get to the switch when you have
a 5 speed in a 99. They had to put the switch
PER instructions down by the power outlet.

Clem,

You seem to have a '99 which uses the same E-Brake as my model year 2000. I installed the brake myself and never cut the dash, installing a two-speed axle switch on the shift lever instead.

The only wires that pass through the firewall that are necessary to operate the brake are the red and the yellow - the green only provides a path to ground for the light in the toggle switch (wire harness P/N 025274 figure 25 of the installation manual).

The only wires needed on the harness that contains the toggle switch (wire harness P/N 026148 figure 25 of the installation manual) are the black and the yellow. The white and the green on this harness provide power and ground for the light in the toggle switch.

Your shift-lever mounted switch needs to connect red to yellow OR black to yellow, depending on the harness you hook into.

I couldn't tell from your post whether or not the brake is already installed and wired. If it is, the white wire from the switch to the cigar lighter can be saved and used as a source of key-on 12 volts.

I'll second that. I actually installed the dash mounted switch so that I would have a master switch (which I always leave on). The gear shift mounted switch only needs to open and close the wire coming from the ECM. Your install instructions should clearly show which color this is.

I have a question for you guys... What did you use to mount the 2speed axle switch to the stick? There's a good marine supply shop in Seattle that has the 2speed axle switches in stock, but I haven't run across any nice looking clamps. I know you can order the BD brake with custom made mounting clamps for the stick, but can the BD clamps be purchased separately? I'm not into hose clamps or shrink tubing.

Mike,

I too am into clean installations. I purchased a switch (Eaton P/N 032861), clamp (Eaton P/N 032420), and retainer (unknown manufacturer & part number) at a company that supplies and repairs large truck drivelines. I've seen the switch at NAPA under another brand name.
The clamp was relatively light weight but extremely strong - I can best describe the material as spring steel (very hard). Unfortunately it was made to fit a smaller diameter shift lever. I annealed a portion of the clamp and was able to modify it - cleanly - to the Ram.
Semi-flat black paint and a chrome-plated bolt completed the install.

Thanks Thomas,I'll check with some of the trucking suppliers. I also went as far as drilling a hole in the stick so the wires will run inside instead of outside. I alredy ran wires and lit up the shift pattern, hehe.

Yes the BD switch and mount can be ordered separate. I ordered mine today. Just make sure you get the correct size, they have two types. One for the older trucks which is PN 1300240 and one for I believe 99 and up which is PN 1300210.
