Some of the articles in past TDR magazines have inferred that Cummins is already building cooled e. g. r. engines for applications other than the Ram. Is this true? And if so, what's the track record with the e. g. r. ? Any major problems? Thanks for the info.

a) true; everything but Dodge uses egr now

b) too early to be sure; obviously Cummins in confident egr is ok [many of us would prefer not to have egr]

c) there are rumors Cummins "might" be able to avoid egr on the Dodges; too early to tell about this one

E. G. R. stands for exhaust gas recirculation. In order to meet emission standards, some manufacturers choose to take a small portion of the exhaust gases and mix it into the engine's intake charge. Gas vehicles began using e. g. r. in the early 1970s. I believe Cummins/Ram 12V sold in California used this system, also.

I was about to bring this topic up again. It sure would be nice to know more about this rumor that Cummins may be able to avoid it in the Rams. If anyone hears anything let your extended family know. :)

the egr system inserts a small amount of exhaust gasses into the incoming air charge to dilute the oxygen content in the fresh air charge. this reduses combustion temprature [and power, and efficency:rolleyes: ] to lower the NOX output which is caused when the nitrogen in the atmosphere is broken up during combustion. i think the egr system is a mickey mouse system to solve this problem. now, i gotta get my cummins ho before the jan. 1. 2004 cut date to not get the egr system.

#@$%! #@$%! BOO EGR #@$%! #@$%!

Does anyone know when Dodge/Cummins is going to start EGR production in RAMs? Or perhaps even more useful, when is the latest that I can order a new truck and NOT have EGR come through in it?

BUILT BEFORE JANUARY 1 2004

as far as i know, if you get an early 2004 model, built before the january 1, 2004 you will get the good engine. after that, it has the egr system, and it will be crap. i am going to order my 2004 as soon as i can order a 2004 model. it'd be nice to find a 03 off a lot around the fall time to get a good deal, but i will never find what i want [2500 cummins HO 6 speed SLT sport atlantic blue 6disc in dash dark graphite interior premium cloth floor shift 4x4 4dr shortie with some other options too... the 6 speed will be the hard one to find, considering that up here, the 6 and the slushbox are the same price:rolleyes: so that's why it'll be an order... ]
