I have an early 04 DC in my shop from a local farmer that will not start until

he squirts starting fluid in airbox. (I know thats not a good idea but these farmers will do what they gotta do. ) after it starts it runs good and has good power. he said if he shuts it off for ten minutes it will not start without starting fluid. I checked his fuel pressure idling, and zero. so I replaced his stock lift pump with one I had taken off, and it had 7 psi idling. but still would not start. a little s fluid and it starts and runs good.

I need help. can anyone tell me what is wrong? I would really appreciate any help you guys can give me. thank you

The injectors have their own return system in them. They wear out, leak down and the truck wont start via the starter but the either is getting enough rpm for them to prime up and fire. Have a friend going through the same thing with his 03 305 HO now.

Some cases of a no or hard start have been this or the FCA on the CP3 pump.

thanks for the input. I forgot to mention this truck is stock power with 106K miles, no codes at all. I think I'll tell him to take it to a dealer to have it diagnosed. that should tell if any injectors are not up to snuff.

thanks again, Harold

I concur with Mac if just one of the injectors goes bad, return fuel, it will show good rail pressure and no codes but will not start. I really don't think we have seen the worst of these injectors yet.

well what stumps me is when it starts it runs and idles real nice. has good power also. no fuel in oil. looks like a bad injector would mis or slobber or smoke excessivly. I just have a scan tool. I can't diagnose this one. so I'll take the easy way out. let the dealer diagnose.

, i have had this problem on two different trucks and one truck with two sets of injectors, once its started they run great, injectors are the culprit... . :)

thanks for the input everyone. everything seems to point to the injectors. but the dealers have got a diagnostic tool that will show the condition of every injector and what percentage each one is putting out. thanks again, Harold
