I've heard that the early 24 valves had quite a few problems. I was wondering if there is any merit to this, and if so, what problems there were/are.

Thanks

As far as my 99 (non-53 block) it's been the usual: lift pump replacements (4), then I got the GFS-392, adjusted the valves @ 100k, front pads & calipers (2 sets), did the DTT @ 139, alternator back in April this year, other than that it's been fine 149k and counting. Not sure if VP is original as I bought it w/75k.

78k on a completely stock engine. Only problems so far are the oil press sensor goes out about every 35k miles.

1 lift pump a 115K miles(FASS replacement), AC Compressor at 140K, Automatic Transmission rebuilds at 53K, 106K the third is a Stage IV ATS, love it. Brakes issues, went to slotted rotors and hawk pads on front (really good comb) also added 3 washers(height) under the rear brake proprtioning valve mount on the rear shock, this really improved the rear brakes for my 35s, if you are running stock tires I would run one or two and on 285's I ran 2 which really helped.

from what i have read the 02's had bad VP's for some reason,... . but my 01 has been an awesome truck, 1 L/P and org. VP44 with 270,000km's

tabell - could you PM me a picture of this "3 washers under the proportioning valve" mod?

I don't think that the early ones are any worse than the later ones. Except for the 53 block issue of course. Like Graphic Man said the 02s seem to have more problems with the vps, there is a thread on it.

My brothers has been flawless in the 75000mi. The lift pump was still working when the FASS went in and the vp is still original.

It seems to me that the earlier trucks take to mods better.

I would also like to see some pics on this.

outside of the failures i had from a litle too much moding my truck has been flawless. i did have an oil pump fail on me on the way home from work one night, which is very rare i guess. but the rebuild was perfect time for a big cam!
