Easier to do head work now or after blown HG?

What would be easier or the best choice? Remove the cylinder head now/buy a new head, have the head work done, firering or o-ring job NOW. OR wait til the time comes when I blow a headgasket, then remove the head, have the head work done, fire or o-ring, and headgasket, and head studs?

Time- got weekends, money- some. I'm more than likely gonna get a new style head so I can have the 7mm injector bores. Head work, just o-ringed or fireringed. Do it locally at Scheids, no shipping charges. Course they might use Haisley for machine work. ? I don't think my old 89, 9mm injector bore cracked head would be work having any work done to it, even if it doesn't have cracks.

Edit: or just keep the old HG for now and buy the 12mm studs?

get the studs, put them in without pulling the head... buy you a little time and some more clamping strength...



then get you another head and have it cleaned up/decked/o-ringed, etc.



then you can wait for the gasket to take a dump on you to swap it out or do it whenever you get the time.

You would be wasting your time to put the studs in without pulling the head. You have to bottom tap the holes and clean them out. But I agree if you're going to get a different head anyway, get it ready then swap it on a Saturday. You going to do any port work?

Joe, I hadn't planned on doing any myself. I was gonna see if Scheid sells any new ported/o-ringed heads like Piers advertises.

studs go in finger tight... the final torque comes from the nuts up top...

BILL-you know you're going to need a head gasket repair, sooner or later... . Get a new head coming, already oringed, studs, and have'em port it up. Be done with it. IF you wait until it blows you might get to enjoy trying to get oil out of the radiator and cooling passages in the block, or water out of the oil system or both. That's a mess I rather not have in my job. It adds a lot of time and labor into a headgasket job. The last time my head gasket blew, my engine got real hot, because the coolant was being blown out by compression and I was towing. I almost did not catch it in time. Granted you don't work your truck, and will probably catch on before damage is done, why take the risk?

I do my own work, so I'd hate to have to have it done by someone else if I went out of town. Typically I don't go anywhere that a tow couldn't get me home affordably. I am gonna compare local price vs. Piers and shipping.

Not until I can get me another ride, looking for another 1st gen CTD. That way I can have the crew down for conversion, and if I want or need the 89 down for upgrades or whatever, I have something to drive... Thats right no wife, I can do such things :-laf . .



Moose, I'll be at IRP, I'm thinking about staying over there this year instead of driving back and forth like last year.
