If you go with any brake other than BD make sure you get the on off switch on the shifter.

3StarZ27,

What did you use for a spring tool? Is there an issue of TDR that gives complete instructions?

SlyBones...

I used the compressor from Snap-On that starts out with equal length legs but has a pivoting head that adjusts for the helix of the spring. I bought it from Snap-On online and as I remember the total price (tool, shipping etc. ) was around $55. 00. I think the tool number was CG-90 and I believe K-D makes it for them and have seen the K-D's in the low $40's.

(I bought it just for this job and since I will probably never have a need for it again if your interested e-mail me outside of the board and I will sell you mine shipped for $40. 00)

If you want to call me (e-mail me for the phone number) I will take you through the spring change step by step, item by item and it's not really bad at all.

It took longer to install the brake than change the springs and lash the valves so it really is not anything to fear.

I am a programmer by trade, not a mechanic and would not hesitate to do another now that I have 1 under my belt. After doing it I could not believe I was quoted anywhere from $175. 00 to $300. 00 JUST for the spring change and I had to supply the springs!!!!

I'm sure there is information in past TDR issues but my library starts with issue #31 so I can't say for sure if or when it was covered.

Jim

P. S. DieselB59 did an excellent job on listing the procedure to follow. You might want to check it out...

Okay so lets find out what the best setup is. Is a lockup switch the best way to go or is some other modifcation for locking up my auto transmission. How do most people have this setup for an auto transmission.

DD, you may want to check out Best of Shadetree Mechanic on TNN today, They install a e-brake on a Cummins and walk you though the entire process including the valve springs.
Can't tell you the play times as I have a C-Band satellite dish, it plays four times today and again tomorrow for me. Check their website for your area and TV provider. -Bill

3 star hits it on the head, I used the K&D tool and did the springs very easily ! If you follow B5. 9 instructions you will do fine. Make sure though that you set a day for it and take your time. If you rush it it could be a nightmare. Good luck , and remember you have a wealth of knowledge here on the board #ad
