I know over the years I have read people talking about the computers "learning" the drivers habits etc. You can clean them out by battery disconnect for x amount of time.

What exactly does the computer learn about your habits etc?

TIA

Here are a few things related to "Learning", might not exactly answer your question. I'm not sure exactly what registers are kept/updated in any active learning over certain drive time.

But if a procedure was "Learned", by resetting it would default back to the standard values.

Transmission
Quick Learn has to be done after the below are performed, Drive Learn is not always required but can help with individual shifting conditions.

Quick Learn
The quick learn procedure requires the use of the scan tool.

This program allows the electronic transmission system to recalibrate itself. This will provide the proper transmission operation.

The quick learn procedure should be performed if any of the following procedures are performed:

  • Transmission Assembly Replacement.
  • Transmission Control Module Replacement.
  • Solenoid Pack Replacement.
  • Clutch Plate and/or Seal Replacement.
  • Valve Body Replacement or Recondition.
  • To perform the Quick Learn Procedure, the following conditions must be met:

  • The brakes must be applied.
  • The engine speed must be above 500 rpm.
  • The throttle angle (TPS) must be less than 3 degrees.
  • The shift lever position must stay in PARK until prompted to shift to overdrive.
  • The shift lever position must stay in overdrive after the Shift to Overdrive prompt until the scan tool indicates the procedure is complete.
  • The calculated oil temperature must be above 60° and below 200°.

Drive Learn
When a transmission is repaired and a Quick Learn procedure has been performed on the Transmission Control Module (TCM), the following Drive Learn procedure can be performed to fine tune any shifts which are particularly objectionable.

NOTE:
It is not necessary to perform the complete Drive Learn procedure every time the TCM is Quick Learned. Perform only the portions which target the objectionable shift.

Thanks for the info, fwd this to my brother who is replacing the TM in a 1500, I assume this is a dealer needed visit using their scan tool
