Edelmann 70699 Power steering filter

Just wondering if anyone has used the Edelmann 70699 power steering filter on their truck? It’s supposed to be serviceable whereas most of the others are not. I’ve seen some guys have problems with the plastic type filters cracking and leaking. I know there is a Magnefine option in both plastic (readily available) and metal housings. Thanks for any thoughts.

I had something similar installed first (it's not a filter- it's a screen) but then moved on to a true hydraulic filter which isn't a lot more expensive for filter head and hoses.

That’s interesting Ozy, did you have trouble finding a spot to mount that kit? Seems pretty tight down in there..

I can't help on the Edelmann but it seems to be a fine product. I use the Napa/Magnefine filter on my '91 and '01. Also have a cooler on the '01 and use Redline power steering fluid in both trucks. Pretty sure I will be adding one on my '21.

The Napa is somewhat serviceable as it comes apart, but I can't ID the filter. If I could, it would probably cost as much as the complete unit, so...

Everything since 2002 comes with a factory cooler.

I have it in the left front corner. All set up with AN connections and a gauge to show me the filter load.

Fluid change is also easier now, just take the filter of and drain in a bucket.
That's also why I haven't installed valves like others did - when the filter is ready for a change the fluid is too.

You did a nice job on that.. looks great.. hadn’t thought about a valve.. that’s a good idea too if not doing a spin on filter like you’ve done here…

I like the cooler.. where did you find that? That seems like a good idea.. I swear everytime I start on something with this truck it morphs into a couple hundred more dollars and an extra several hours (days) of tinkering to make the system(s) the best they can be.. it’s hard to resist when I just want to change things out and get back on the road.. ha ha. I used to go all out on this type of stuff but it’s a little harder now when the rest of the truck is falling apart around the engine..

Additional benefit with the filter setup, half a quart more fluid in the system.
Keeps it cooler and last longer.

It is actually a transmission cooler that I had on the shelf for years and never used. It is over kill but it fit so good I went ahead and used it.

That was sure a good move, the PS gets quite hot when you work it.
At least Ram figured that out too and put them on from factory. I installed one in my GC back then for the same reason.

Yes, I was talking about a filter. You did an awesome job on your install. TSC has the base and filters for small hydraulic systems such as a wood splitter. I don't think I want to tackle that big of a job Think I will stay with Napa inline.

Thank you, yes with the AN parts you can make very very nice setups.
I also did a coolant filter setup and a transmission fluid filter here.
Same filter, same base just 8AN plumbing instead of 10AN.

Pictures are taken with the front driveshaft disassembled.

I have been running a smaller finned cooler with a Magnefine throw-away inline filter. I like this setup much better.

I ended up going with the Napa inline filter.. I had the Edelmann one ready to go in, but I disliked that it was only a steel screen filter. I like the bigger spin-on filter setups too, but I think the magnet is important which they don’t have.. It would be nice to put a cooler on and a serviceable magnet housing with the spin on filter, that seems like the best of all worlds.. but I had to shelf everything but the basic to get it running again… another thing to put on the list for future upgrading..
