OK guys, I'm planning to install my Edge with Attitude, and AutoMeter gauges (boost & EGT) this weekend. I have been searching the forums for ideas on installing the two EGT probes without much luck. I originally planned to install the AutoMeter probe pre-turbo just above the flange. The Attitude instructions have you to also install the probe pre-turbo. I'm thinking that with two probes I should probably install one post and one pre so I could monitor both. I was also wondering why the Attitude instructions call for a 21/64" or 5/16" drill bit for the 1/8" NPT tap? I was planning to use an 11/32" for the AutoMeter probe. Is the Attitude probe different?

Anyway, looking for ideas from folks who are running two EGT probes, or anyone who has ideas, or suggestions on this setup. Pics would be great too.

Thanks for any responses.

I have 2 EGT sensors both pre-turbo in the exhaust manifold. One Autometer and now TST. Originally the second one was for the HOT Juice/Attitude. I did not do the install, but the probes and fittings in the exhaust manifold were/are all the same. I just removed the Juice/Attitude probe and screwed in the TST probe when I switched. One probe is on top of exhaust manifold between cyl 3 & 4, the other is on top about 1. 5" farther toward the rear.

I wanted both pre-turbo because of mods that can produce HIGH EGTs sometimes. Need the TST to see pre-turbo for de-fueling and want Autometer there incase the TST box needs to come off for ugrade, and just to confirm EGTs.

Mine read about the same at all temps. Maybe 25* difference at most, although the digital readout is a little slower to display changes.

To make sure the Juice module works correctly it MUST be pre-turbo. Your other probe could be post turbo if you wanted, but there really isn't any need (that I know of) to know post turbo temps. Who cares how hot your exhaust piping gets... ;)

As far as the drill bit size, 21/64" is the "exact" size to use for a 1/8" NPT tap, but your 11/32 is only 1/64" oversize. Your thread profile will not be as full if it was tapped with the larger pilot bit, but since there isn't really any high pressure leak issues, it probably won't matter. That being said, the instructions refer to 21/64 and 5/16 which is 1/64 smaller, not the bigger bit size that you propose to use. I would spend the small amount of money and get a 21/64 bit, so I would not have any excuse for the probe coming out because of crappy threads.

my 2 cents...

Having a probe after the turbo is kind of like setting your clock forward to keep yourself from being late. You always end up making the correction in your head anyway. Since you're going to install one pre-turbo, you're obviously not concerned with the chance that it might get sucked through the turbo. Not many of us are concerned with this either, and I've never heard of one doing this.

I say just go with the one pre-turbo like ThomasCook says.

Hey Jason,

Not sure, but it's probably technically possible to "share" an EGT probe between two devices, but I'm not sure if your readings would be very accurate. I would assume that each EGT probe is calibrated to that device, so mixing is probably not recommended. I'm sure someone with better technical understanding could give a better explanation.

Thermocouple devices measure the difference in temperature between two points, called the hot junction and the cold junction. Adding a third point *may* work, depending on how the receiving devices sample the voltage. If any of the meters are D'Arsonval type, I think your accuracy will be affected. We're talking about millivolts here - very delicate stuff.

You may be able to get a dual-element thermocouple.

Thanks for the feedback. Whenever I'm ready to add a performance box I'll look into the dual-element thermocouple. I was just curious to see if anyone had done such a mod.

Thanks,

Jason

Jason, you might add your truck/mods/equipment to the signature line so we'd know what you're peddlin' down the street, for sure.

I've been wondering about a dual element thermo or running a guage and the edge off one thermo also. I want it so if I pull out the box for service there is still a reason to have a thermo in the manifold. I thought about just putting the gueage in and switching it when needed, but I don't want a guage that doesn't do anything, that would bug me. I'd have to explain all that every time someone rode with me.

I've seen a 2" guage hole adaptor to mount the Attitude... . could alternate between the attitude and the std 2" guage when taking in for service... .
