Last summer I installed a Power Edge Comp on my 98. 5-24V, along with Blue Chip Pump cover, and gauges. It works great, helping me pull a 10K GVWR 5th wheel trailer in NC mountains. One problem - Check Engine Light comes on about 1 out of 20 engine startups. This is accompanied by a slight, yet brief rev up of engine just after starting. After that, all works fine and Check Engine Light goes out after the usual three startup cycles. Happens whether I leave the Edge-Comp on or off during startup. What seems to help most is turning key on for about a minute to let everything stabilize, before starting, but even that is not 100%, the Check Engine Light will still come on sometimes. I don't have a code reader, so I can't tell you the code (maybe a good excuse to get one?) Being intermittent makes this a tough one for me -- maybe someone has an idea...

If you cycle the ingnition switch 3 times without starting it off on off on off on and leave it on the third time watch the odometer and it will display the codes one will be PCM codes, itll show the codes, then it will say PCM done, then it will show ECM then show the code and say ECM done. After that you can shut the key off and post the codes it throws, should be P something. Then we can go from there.

 oh yeah, my bad, good catch ;)

Well, I guess its off to the dealer to be sure, or buy a scanner as you said earlier. Even orur 89 Dakota gives codes with the key trick

I don't believe the key cycle worked on the 98. 5s. But I know the exact problem you are having as I have a 2001 and it has done it several times, I am also using a comp box. But for your information it always comes up 1693 and clears after a few starts. I quit worrying about it along time ago. Like you said it may happen once in a month or maybe once in a year. 1693 seems to be a catch all code it the ecm and pcm are not understanding each other.

My 02 has done the same thing several times. Sometime its 2 or 3 times a day. I found 1689 code. SOmeone else on the other site has the same problem but does not have the pumpwire on. I took mine to the dealer, less the comp, and complained about it. They reflashed and now the problem has not come back but I haven hooked the pump back up yet. Dont know if t will be the same cure for you but check it out. High rpm starts are not a good thing at all!!
