Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Can't Stop Truck When Turning???

My 02 has been doing some strange things lately. It makes a pulsating sound that gets louder than back to normal in a matter of seconds with no change in RPM. It will do this when the engine is cold and also after it has been traveling for about 3/4 hr at highway speeds when it just shuts down until it has slowed to about 1800RPM then it runs normally. Codes 0216 and 0500 have been set. Lift pump was changed but no help. I then unhooked the Edge and all the problems went away-at least for now. I know the 0216 means a timing problem with the injector pump but could it be caused by the Edge? Anyone else had this happen? The truck has about 58,000 miles.

I Had exact problem...

I Had the EXACT same problem in December, with my Diesel Dynamic True Torque Power Module, which is just an Edge EZ programmed for DD. E-mailed them and sent box in. In 1 week had a new box free of charge. No problems now. Dont know why it went bad in the first place, but u gotta figure, under the hood of a Cummins is not a nice place for electronics regardless how well made.

Just a thought.

Did any of you that had this problem also throw a 0216 code. That is what has me curious/worried. Could the Edge cause the pump to throw this code if there is nothing wrong with the injector pump? As I said in my first post, when I unhook the Edge the "pulsing" noise stops and engine has not quit-yet. I do miss the added performance of the Edge,as modest as it is.

scan

RDBuck,, did you scan for codes with the EZ hooked up, or did you unplug it first?? I know the directions with the ez says to unhook it before doing a scan because it can cause false codes. I know with my superchips programed in the ecm, it shows an over fuel code or something like that. Just a suggestion, hope it isn't your VP44.

I did the scan when the EZ was hooked up. Now that it is unhooked the codes are still there but the problems are gone-or so it seems. I plan to tow a trailer from Mass. to Daytona (bike week) at the end of next week so I guess I'll find out if I have any serious problems or not. I may need to know where some good Dodge Cummins dealers are located down South in case the engine quits altogether.

Mine was setting both a 234 and 216 code. The 234 would go away periodically, but the 216 would return immediately. I drove it this way for a couple months. Then, it stumbled pretty badly accellerating from a stop, so I went in to the dealer. They replaced the VP under warranty. I replaced the lift pump on my own because they said it met the flow specs and would not replace it.

I intermittently had a few similar symptoms already mentioned, codes, ticking, stumble. I unplugged my DDTTPM to see if that might be the problem. I was still having the same problems without it so I drove around until I could get into the dealer. They replaced the VP-44 under warranty.

A few people have ridden the 0216 code for extended lengths of time, but most experience VP failure shortly after it appears. It could be a false reading, it has happened, but that statistics are hard to deny. Getting stuck on the side of the road towing a trailer sounds like a royal drag. Sourcing a replacement VP and locating repair shops along your route before you leave is a very smart thing to do.

"Houston, I think we have a problem"

After reading this thread I believe the EZ might be a link here. Along with some stumbling, I only pop the P0216 code when the EZ is plugged in and I am running her hard. When I unplug the box and clear the code, I get smooth throttle response and no codes on hard runs. I am going to forward this thread to tech@edgeproducts.com and follow it up. I will post any replies.

I have had 0216 since Oct, when my lift pump quit on me on the way home, so a failed lift pump will also set that code ( need to get around to clearing that code)

Cant over look the fact that ALL my symptoms went away after DDTTPM was unhooked and have not returned either in stock trim or with the new DDTTPM hooked up. I am chaulkin' my problems up to bad box.

just my . 02.
