I have noticed some of you recommending using the Edge Comp instead of the EZ and not hooking up the pump tap wire until drive train mods are complete. This gives the benefit of not having to sell the EZ when stepping up. Has any one tried this? Do you get about the same performance as the EZ? Can this damage the Edge Comp or the ECM? I have an e-mail into Edge with these questions, but they have not answered yet... :(

As usual, any comments welcome :D

Jim

do it, you wont regret it.....

I run the Comp without the pump wire, and love it. I am waiting to see ATS's new transmission, and compair it to DTT's before I jump in, so the pump wire will have to wait. I have been doing this since September, and the only problem is self control. I dynoed with the box off at 195(stock), and 236 with it on 1-1(same #'s for 5-5).

I would do it all over again if need be. Any more questions, ask away.

Andrew

Jim,

This would give you the equivalent of an adjustable EZ. In my opinion this is an excellent way to go. This will not damage the Comp , ECM, or truck in any way. Go for it!!!

Doug

Thanks!

Wow, you guys are quick! I go away for a few minutes and I have replies! This bunch is the BEST! :D

Andrew,

I was wondering if this would be an issue... :D

Thanks again for the replies!

Jim

that's not the real issue.....

The self-control isn't the hardest part really, it's the nick name I got at the last dyno day for having the "Loose Wire". For some like Glen(BFC) he hooked it up, but doesn't use it over setting 3-5, now that is self-control.

Andrew

Jim,I had the EZ for 2 weeks, then got the comp, what a difference!Go with the Comp, that way you have the option of low speed smoke control from in the cab,and you can turn it off,if you want, with the EZ you cant do either without unhooking it,or pulling the cover to switch the jumper. I wouldnt ask Dodge any questions about fueling boxes,Im sure your name would be on their list, whenever your name got punched in the main puter, for warranty work a red flag would go off. Besides,Dodge just throws them together,we fine tune them with nice guages,Edge comps,285 BFG's,and trans work!If local dealers are any indication, they know much less about these trucks than you think.

Hi

I just install my Comp with not wire it awsome. My wife noticed the truck goes on the freeway on ramps, she not sure if good or bad though did say much else, I work away a lot so i thought we go a little power and better mileage to start with. Thanks to smokindiesel for guages and Comp.

Andrew,

Most of the time... ... ... . I'm just a few hundreds short from my full transmission upgrades, self control seems to be slipping more often these day but I'm still doing good by my junkie standards... ..... meaning the innards of the transmission aren't in the pan yet.

Glenn

Who in the world are you...?

Glen,

Havn't seen you around in a while, nice to see you back. So your going to get the DTT huh? I have been debating between them and ATS now. I like the positive comments from their customers so far.

Andrew

I just bought the Comp for the same reasons. Right now I just want an EZ. For about $75 more I get in the cab controls and the ability to upgrade at any time. My question is this, if I go ahead and hook up the wire and run it on setting 1, is that about the same as an EZ? Or, is it more than just an EZ? What setting can I safely run it on with a stock auto trans? This is the only power mod I have. Will do the DTT trans stuff as soon as I get a minute.

Thanks,

Dave.

Dave,

I've been driving with it on 3/5 since I've installed it. Made a "few" runs on 4/5 and 5/5. holding up good so far. 1/5 is the EZ setting with the VP44 wire hooked up.

Glenn

Dave,

survey says... ... ... ... ... ... ... ..... OFF :D

Just kidding, 1x5 should be fine, this is about the same as an EZ!

just to clearify.....

I just want to add something here for those who think that leaving the pump wire NOT hooked up can change levels. I dynoed WITHOUT the pump wire, and on level 1x1, it made the same as 5x5. The ONLY difference was 1ft-lbs, yes that is a single foot pound of torque. It doesn't matter what level you run it on with out the pump wire because it is going to do the same thing regaurdless.

Andrew

Andrew-

So are you saying that not hooking up the wire produces the same level as with the wire on?

I'd like to go with a comp, but I want the "stealth" ability of my EZ when I take it to D/C.

Az,

If you don't hook up the wire, you get an EZ. Even if you put it on 5/5 you don't get more power. There is only so much fuel you can get from the ECM only. If you want the full power of the Comp, you need the VP44 wire hooked up. If you have no intention of ever punching the pump wire, buy the EZ.

Glenn

BFC-

got the EZ now but I want to get DDII's, new clutch, exhaust so I figure once I do that, i'll want more out of my ECM.

clarification please.....

ok guys--please pardon my ignorance. if i put on a comp and dont hook up the pump wire... . the comp functions as an EZ on level 3? can you turn it down to an EZ level 1 or 2? for the extra few bucks, im now considering the comp... and an SBC clutch down the road. thanks.

let's try again......

What I ment in my last post was the only thing you can control WITHOUT the pump wire is if it is on or not. There are no adjustible setting with the Comp if you DO NOT hook up the wire. If you hook up the pump wire, then there are lots of options.

You want more out of you ECM? Don't get started on that. I do too, will somebody please do this for me?

Andrew

Short answer - yes

Now for the long one, you don't get more power on the EZ by moving the jumper from 1 to 3. Just WHEN you get the power not how much. You can acheive the same thing with the comp by moving the timming setting 1 trough 5, but playing with the fueling setting (power)1/5 won't do anything without the VP44 wire, make any sense?
