New Member here. First off, thanks for the wealth of info and knowledge I have gained from this site. The few mods I have are a direct result of information I learned from all of you. Forgive my ignorance about vehicles as I have very limited knowledge except for what I have put on the truck and the usual fluid changes required. I thought I read a post on here where you get excessive torque converter slippage (??) when having a stock truck w/ an EZ on it? Is that true? Do you need to up the injectors? Get a new VB or TC or both? Any input will be greatly appreciated! TIA.

Welcome to the TDR. I think when you up the power with an auto you will eventually slip the lock-up clutch that engages in 3rd and 4th gears to lock the torque converter together. A VB will increase the line pressure to provide stronger lock-up action. Adding injectors means more power so this won't help the transmission at all.

Changing the TC is not required for transmission longevity, however it has the benefit of engaging at a lower RPM and transferring more of the Cummins low-end torque to the ground. The lock-up clutch is part of the converter so upgrading the TC will get you a better lock-up clutch as well.

That's a stick-shifter's view of the auto transmission tech. :)

Thanks for the prompt reply! Still a bit unclear but i'm learning! So an EZ and a new VB would be a good start? I mainly just use the truck for towing the 5ver, it's about 9000lbs when loaded (haven't run it over the scales yet!).

Tony,

I wish some auto transmission guys would jump in here but I believe that just an EZ on a stock motor can give enough extra torque to slip your lock-up clutch. With just the EZ I think a VB upgrade should be enough to prevent your lock-up clutch from slipping, with an EZ and injector upgrade I'm not sure.

I think you may also be able to manually increase your line pressure on your transmission, this would save you buying the VB upgrade but won't improve the shift points like a VB will. If you contact Diesel Transmission Technology (DTT) I've heard they are helpful over the telephone.

Gotta run, back thursday and good luck.

You might get by with an EZ and no slipping for awhile,I did, but it caught up to me in a few thousand miles. Not all Auto Trans. are created equal, you might have a good one that will last for a hundred K. There are a lot of guys who claim that on their stock transmission's. I hope you were one of the lucky ones. chuck. :)

The EZ will not hurt your transmission..

I have a 2001 and I ran a power edge fuel box (+90 HP) on it for about 8K miles with no problems, then I had my transmission re worked for the addition of injectors and and EZ. The transmission never missed a beat.

There are lots of guys out there running the EZ by itself with out any problems. If you tow huge loads (over CGVW) then I might worry a bit, but if you just drive the truck to work etc get and ez and be happy.

If you have the $$ and plan on doing more increases in the future I would go for an Edge Comp and just not hook up the fuel pump wire. Then later once you are ready you can hook it up.

By the way, welcome to the TDR.

Tony, you may be able to get by with the EZ if your not toing, but towing 9K,with 3. 54's,and an EZ,this is a recipe for trans slippage. Go with your instincts here, get the VB,and ez,do them together, save your trans, you will shudder, and slip the lockup if you dont, then end up putting the vb in anyway. if you are towing over the 16000 GCWR with 3. 54's,you may need to do more to the transmission, check your weight when you can, good luck.

Thanks guys! Very helpful! Guess i'll just have to get some more goodies now! :D Does anyone know of a DTT installer in the Michigan area???
