Hey guys, this is my first thread, just joined yesterday :) I know it's the age old question, Smarty or Edge, but I'd really like to hear everyone's input. I've got a set of gauges on the way from Geno's so the attitude wouldn't be necessary. Also, what kind of power can the G56 handle and what levels are you guys running on your truck... Mine is still stock... for now :-laf

I think the smarty is the better setup and I will have one soon. It has a ;lot of difrent programs for diffrent setups so it can grow with your truck.

I have tried, and still have them both on my 07 5. 9, and still can't decide which one to sell. Both work well, but each is better suited for a different need.

The Edge with Attitude is way better for towing, because of the controllability and maxium set-points, especially on hills at high altitudes like here in Colorado. You can tow safely with little worry using the Edge with the Attitude. The Edge is very clean and conservative, with very little smoke.

The Smarty makes way more power than the Edge, almost instantly. The Smarty will definitely make you and passengers say "WOW!". But if you tow with the Smarty, you are going to break something if you aren't careful. Also the Smarty can be smokey if you don't control it with your right foot.

The Smarty is also easier to "install", but you can't just turn it off or change the power level with a switch like the Edge. Instead you have to stop and do the 5-10minute reload.

It really depends on what you want to do with your truck, Tow or Drag Race...

I can't speak for the 3rd Gens but I know in the 2nd gens the 6 speed guys seem to have better luck than the auto guys or at least thats been my take in reading all of the threads in regards to the Smarty... .

Remember edge has been out in the market for a LONG time. Smarty is very nice and has many different programs for different applications. Edge also has many diff options. I would make a list of the options/features both provide and figure which ones you want more.

Edge can change your levels as you drive down the road, which was a big feature in my mind. Also since i tow a 33' 5th i like the backdown features for safty. I have the Att 2 and although its more money it has a ton of great features which i love.

displays 8 different guages from over 16 choices

TOM TOM navigation

turbo cool down

alerts and back downs

tire size correction

Like everyone has already said, each has its own plus/minus features. I think as far as safety for the truck (EGRs) the driver can control them with the Smarty. I havent had any problems, towing (24' walk-around boat with twin outboards), or normal driving. I am running the latest download from Smarty at SW#3 with moderate torque management, and its almost scary how fast the throttle response is. I know all of he programmers work, but i like the simplicity of the Smarty and not having to mount a box. G56 doesnt mind the programmer, unless you drive like a crazy person. I can slip the clutch in 5th and 6th gear if i am running along and just floor it. Once you learn to ease into it, its a passing machine! I am sold on the Smarty, but thats was my choice, and everyone is entitled to their own.

I just purchased a SMARTY a few months ago and am fooling around with it now. There is a lot of wisdom in the previous replies (especially the one from Thorn. Aside from the previous recommendations, one of the great things about SMARTY is it can't be detected by Dodge once the program has been returned to stock. I believe installation of an Edge can be detected as there are some wires taped to achieve the installation. As you have a 06 truck still under warranty this should be considered. Another item worth considering is the service you receive from SMARTY (namely the US representative Bob Wagner). Not only did he put up with some of my starting questions but I notice he responds to numerous threads requesting help on the TDR site. Service like this is rare and difficult to come by. I wish my SMARTY had a program for trailer towing which wouldn't produce as much smoke. I understanding they are currently working on software to address this issue. Aside from that I have been very pleased with the upgraded performance from the SMARTY. I am currently utilizing software # 3 for stock trucks with mild torque increase. This software lists it as safe for auto trannys (60 HP increase). I have a 6 speed G-56 which they say can safely take software #4 or 5 that has a 90 HP increase. I don't drag race the truck or abuse it as I have a lot of $ tied up in it. But I must admit that just knowing the power is just beneath my foot brings on a big smile. Good Luck

im not saying either one is better i have the smarty but i have had both the edge juice and ez. yall mentions somethings it can do that need to be expanded on like tire size corrections it doesnt do it on the ecm it only does it on the attitude screen, and you can still get yourself in a hott situation with that backdown stuff i have gotten pretty hott before. boost gauge will not read over a certain number because it is goin off the factory sensor and it limited, IMO the adjustable on the fly, and turbo timer are the only thing that it has over the smarty. I will prolly run both the edge and smarty very soon.

i've been thinkin' long and hard about this for the wifes '06 ...

always loved the adjustability in mine but she doesn't ...

"just give me a little smoke for tailgaters"

the extra tools are a sweet benefit ...

how do you contact bob?

Bob's SMARTY Web Site is listed below. He has an 800 telephone listed under CONTACT:

Good luck there are numerous programs you can run with the SMARTY. You should find one that closely meets your needs and your truck's abilities.

Used the Edge Juice with Attitude on level 5 and then used the Smarty on level 3 - lots more power with the Smarty.

My question is this..... will the Smarty box that I used on my '04. 5 work on my '06?

Now, you wouldn't be branded a cheat and a liar in a warranty claim situation would you?

The injector harness is different on the 06, sorry won't work.

I need to learn to read slower!

I ASSumed you were asking about the Edge Attitude.

Yes it will. Smarty is not hampered by any wiring harnesses. Works perfect on all 2003 through 2007 5. 9L trucks. the 6. 7L is on deck too.

I have both... ... It's 50/50 for an everyday driver. If you want stupid power and the ability to grow your turbo, injectors ect... you'll want a Smarty. However, if you use your truck for pulling different trailers ... . you'll want an EDGE. The primary job of the truck should make your decision.

Then again... ... you can buy both and stack them. :-laf

Talk about what you know, next time. Smarty plugs into the under-dash OBD-II ALDL port, the same one the dealership plugs into to diagnose/flash the ECM. It's a downloader, not a box. Question is, is the Smarty he bought an S04 (2003-05) or an S06 (2003-07) ? I don't know what the difference is there, but I think if he had an S04 and needed the S06, they said they would swap the box or the internal chipset, IIRC, at no/nominal cost.
