Is it worth doing a border crossing hauling commercial? I would think that would be a serious pain in the posterior depending on what mood US customs happens to be in when you attempt to cross.

I think you are better staying in Canada. You will probably need a fist full of permits, medical certificates etc. etc. . You will also need a big insurance policy, especially running commercially. We were hauling cattle east a few years ago and thought we would come back through the states. That was a mistake. You need all the permits and need to comply with rules for each jurisdiction you travel through. In my opinion it is not worth it for one trip. Have a good trip.

The Superior North Shore route is only slightly longer and staying in Canada might just be a simpler way to go as some of the others have mentioned. The distance according to my GPS is just under 3400 kilometers one way.

Turn onto highway 11 in Northern Ontario (around Nipigon just east of Thunder Bay) through Hearst and North Bay.

This is a better route for making time (but even more boring) than highway 17 through The 'Soo and Sudbury.

Unfortunately Northern Ontario in the summer means 2 lane roads and lots of construction.

Yeah, that sounds like the US right now without the border crossing. The guy that makes those orange barrels must be a very, very rich man.
