EGR Brakes

Any one running the EGR Brake set up for front and rear with hoses and everything else is the up grade worth the money??

Yes. by all means It IS!!



The EGR brake system is a great kit. It shows an improvement over stock during un-loaded driving and around town, and really starts to shine when you put a load on them.



Over stock, the EGR system is light years ahead. Brake fade is near non-exsistant and pedal pressure is significantly less.



The "Full kit" comes with new front rotors (either gas slotted, or cross drilled) and Carbon Kevlar pads, 1. 5L of Hi-Temp Motul 600c Brake fluid, Super duty Blue-Printed Calipers, and Carbon Kevlar rear shoes with bigger rear cylinders. This kit lists under $2,000. Pricey, but Personally, WELL worth it!!



This kit has saved my life Twice, and continues to shine daily.

I'm currently installing the COMPLETE EGR Severe Service upgrade kit (including the rear disc brake conversion) on my '98. 5 Ram right now. In addition, I purchased extra Motul 600 brake fluid, the front and rear Teflon/Kevlar/stainless steel braided brake lines, a set of new wheels studs for the front (new rear studs are provided with the rear disc brake kit), and the recently released Power Bleeder system. Although this system is expen$ive, all components are of really high quality.



I can't wait to get the entire system installed and try it out!

Actually, the kit MCummings detailed (NO rear disc brake upgrade package) is WELL under $2k! In fact, it lists for under $1k (now... they had a basic kit price reduction somewhere in mid 2002).

Would the EGR pads work OK + help if used with the old rotors?

I already have the bigger wheel cylinders in the rear.

I had about 10K Miles on mine, 6K of them towing with 8500lbs and only put the front pads (had rotors turned) on the stock rotors. Didn't have a single problem with them, and yes it was an improvement, but I didn't get the "wow" results I thought I would. I don't know if the slotted or drilled rotors would have made the difference, but I know you can use the stock rotors without incident. I still think money your would be better spent on an E-brake though. Just my . 02

Thanks for the reply. I do have a Pac brake, I'm just operating on the "more is better" principal, especially when some fool cuts in front of me pulling my 12,000# 5er.

EGR front brake kit

I purchased the complete front brake setup for my 97 2500 4x4 and installed last Saturday. I bought my truck new and for the first time since I took delivery the brakes have NO pull to the right. I was reluctant to buy this setup since it was about a grand delievered. Now I am going to pop another grand and convert the rears to disc using EGR.



I can stop from 50mph with hands off the wheel, dead straight stop. I highly recommend this setup.

Bought the entire setup:

Slotted rotors

Kevlar pads

blueprinted calipers

steel lines

1. 5 liters racing brake fluid.

After the install the brake pedal was very firm and stops great. Adjusted rears on Sunday and wow what brakes. Going to drop another $1k on the rear disc conversion. Haven't done any bombing yet. Since brakes are good and steering solid I will keep truck for a few more years. Ordered the Banks power pac and ebrake, will install this weekend. Now that it stops I want to make it go.

I installed a Luke's link kit on trac bar, a borgenson lower shaft, agr pump and box and our Canadian friends bracket and now I can hands off the wheel and go straight and stop with out touching the wheel. Use to be a white knuckle thing.

Rancho makes replacements for the trailing arms in front, track bars to Fordies, big and beefy. Going next Tuesday for swap.



Explained to wife this way, A new $44,000 truck or money into mine. I got a look and shrug so here I go. I didn't mention the DTT transmission I am going to get!

jtwcummins, in addition to what you detailed above I purchased the EGR rear disc brake package (includes 2 more short Teflon/Kevlar/braided stainless steel brake hoses that connect to the new calipers/OE brake lines) among other things, plus the new EGR pressurized brake bleeding kit.



I haven't actually installed the rear disc brake portion of the upgrade package yet as I have been working on a multitude of other enhancements to my Ram lately.



Also, over the Christmas break I painted my four EGR calipers with a caliper paint kit I purchased from The Eastwood Company. Of all the colors they offer (red, white, black, blue, yellow, silver, green and purple), I chose the red which looks very close to my friend's Flame Red Ram. Probably a little overboard, but what the heck.

I would have bought the rear kit, but did complete rears last summer. Replaced all the hardware hoping to get self adjusters working. They work better but not much of an improvement over not working at all. Will do conversion next time rears need to be done.



I was impressed with the EGR fronts. The rotors had zero runout out of the box.



I have been following posts on RAM sites since 1994. Did alot of research on upgrades. I chose BAnk's because they have been around awhile and, overall, have a good reputation. Cost is higher but whole package works together. I should get about 290+- horsepower and 790 ft lbs torque on the ground. This is based on the average results Banks gets in there shop doing the installs. It is less for Calif trucks because of EGR. I am in Cal and mine has a cat and the EGR. Ordered Banks for non cal and also picked up the ATS exhaust manifold. Have a feeling my cat and EGR will be stolen this weekend.
