I bought an EGR Delete Kit(https://www.ppei.com/shop/2009-2018-cummins-egr-cooler-upgrade-kit/) and a Turbo Back Exhaust System(https://www.ppei.com/shop/2013-2018-5-dodge-aluminized-race-exhaust-no-muffler-no-tip/) and it seems pretty straightforward to install based on my expertise.

However, I don't have a programmer or tune yet and was thinking I could just bring it to the local diesel performance shop and have them program one. MY QUESTION... is if I install those two parts mentioned above, will I be able to drive my truck to the shop 9 miles away without issue? I understand there will be CEL's popping up but assume the tune will resolve that. I kind of just want to do some auto work again and these both seem pretty easy to do, I just don't have a tuner and don't want to spend over $1,000 to get a reliable programmer and tune.

Thanks in advance for your help

Talk to the shop that will do the tune but I think it would require having the truck towed without starting to prevent getting codes that can't be cleared but I could be wrong.

Make sure your chosen shop is on board and has not had a visit from EPA suits like some shops.

Fortunately, this shop told me they could install customer supplied parts but cannot have emission deleting parts on their books and referred me to PPEI out of Louisiana, where I got the parts from.

That's what I was worried about - getting any codes generated that would somehow be detrimental to the truck or not be cleared. From a mechanical perspective and not taking CEL's into account, the truck SHOULD be able to physically drive though, right? I can't see why not but better to ask :)

You could also check Anarchy Diesel. Have their tunes on my 06 and they are very good at responding to questions like this one.

Maybe. Computer could go into limp mode and limit your speed. Ask your tuner to be sure.

I will reach out to them also. I'm sure the original shop could answer my question but they're closed today and figured I'd reach out to the masses that have already done it for advice. I wouldn't mind obtaining a tuner also, but not sure which one. I was debating paying a down payment for a "mail-in loaner", but I am also willing to buy one if it's reasonably priced. Happen to have any insight to this? The only one I know for sure is this one(https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B018WDRU9U/ref=ask_ql_qh_dp_hza) but it seems a bit pricey and I was hoping there were other options out there. I only need to program once, then no need to again...

You aren’t going to find much of anything online or over the phone about deleting. If you’re going down that path it’s time to put some miles on the truck and talk to folks face to face.

I understand that, and I've already gotten some good information. My DEF Pump has gone out and I have 135miles to Limp Mode, so trying to avoid literally "putting some miles on the truck". The shop I spoke with also was very helpful over the phone, however I appreciate you chiming in and letting me know... for the most part, you're correct.

You may want to drop the DEF tank and clean the filter, that's were most DEF problems occur , if its Bad check the DEF Injector ,if plugged clean it ...and to stop this in the future check out My DEF thread in this section. Just providing some alternatives to $3K Bill plus the loss of Warranty if any.

I've been eying the MM3 up for future use. DRD website (a custom tuner) emphasizes the ecm must be flashed BEFORE the exhaust is changed out. He also says the OEM exhaust can be used after the flash but to swap it out as soon as possible. I don't have any first hand experience, just passing along what one reputable tuner says about it.

I am sorry that no one has stated this to you, but you will need to buy a programmer/tuner for your truck to do what you want to do. There are a couple of reasons for this, one is most programmers/tuners are VIN lock to the truck that has been deleted. The Programmer/tuner will not work on another truck until it is returned to stock. The other reason is sometimes the truck ECM can have an issue with the program and you will need to reload the program. This has happened in the past on other trucks. Some programmer/tuner can also be used to check engine CELS and clear the codes.

I believe you will also have to remove the DEF tank and lines from the vehicle when you do the delete.

Now there are great Programmers/Tuners on the market today and MM3 is one of them. But I do know that EFILIVE works great for your needs. My younger son has one on his 2013.5 truck. He is also using an Edge Insight CTS2 monitor mounted on the A-Pillar for his needs.

Here is a link to EFILIVE https://www.efilive.com/ I would contact them for further information.

On a side note I carry my Smarty S67 where every I travel along with my INNOVA 3100 Code READER. Just in case I need the Smarty S67.

How many miles on your truck when the DEF pump quit? Just curious. Thanks.

About 120k miles

Yes I was definitely aware that I needed the tuner, just wasn't sure which(if I was to do it myself). Was really looking for some info on what tuner to use, etc...

Also, why would I have to remove the DEF tank if it's not in use anymore?

EFILive has more options, IMO ask Questions, be clear and to the point whoever you choose ,Example I don't want a smoke tune, I tow and would like 550HP and would like to keep MY EB factory functional ETC. If the tuner cannot gain your Trust move on, DD tuning is extremely difficult so choose accordingly.

Thank you for bringing this up. It sounds like EFILive is one option, what are the other options?

An MM3 with WARP is the other option.

I prefer WARP, as I think it has more options. Every time I look at an ECM in EFI I find tables missing over WARP/UDC Pro.

UDC Pro is the US version, i.e. emissions friendly, software.

The MM3 is also a MUCH better monitor than a CTS2. I've had both, and miss my MM3. Maybe one day when my warranty is up I'll go back to a MM3.

So for example, something like this(https://www.amazon.com/MM3-Tuner-Co...rds=mm3+tuner&qid=1568505205&s=gateway&sr=8-1) would be both the programmer and I assume have the programming on the SD card ready to load to the truck? (Just to make sure I'm following along and learning)

What is WARP? Is that the name of the tune package, or one by a certain person?

WARP is a tuning software, just like EFI Live.

You can tune yourself, thou that’s takes a lot of trial and error, or you can buy tunes from tuners. Most will only talk those kind of tunes in person.

If you want a monitor/box tune then look into a Race Me Ultra.
