I was told there is more than one kind of tap, Which kind do I need to install the probe in my manifold? The engine just ate the #5 conrod bearing, and the manifold will be on the shop floor for a week while they order the new crankshaft (#2 in 2000 miles). I will have to do this quick, and can't risk screwing it up.

Thanks!

Think you mean EGT?

There are two common sizes for probes, but they are either one size or the other. Most common is 1/4" NPT. Less common is 1/8" NPT. Both are pipe thread taps. I know most HW stores stock the 1/4" NPT. I couldn't find a 1/8", but the larger hole is better if you install it on the truck and don't take off the turbo (more room to get shavings out).

I just installed an autometer ultralite pyrometer with a type K thermocouple last week. I used a 5/16 drill bit just ahead of the turbo and tapped it with an 1/8" pipe thread tap with a thread pitch of 27. The tap and die kit I had had several different thread pitches for a 1/8 tap. Just make sure the tap and your probe have the same pitch. I also drilled the hole with the truck at idle and all the shavings blew out of the hole with no problem and when I tapped the hole (with truck off) I used lots of grease on the tap and then just a small pocket extenable magnet to fish out any fillings left in the manifold. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the quick replies. I am almost sure mine is 1/4".

I just wanted to get the right tap, from what I have read on here, I do not want to tap all the way through. And the manifold will be off the truck for a week, so I really want to do it now.

I will grab the probe and take it with to the hardware store to be sure. I like the idea of the pilot hole too. .

The tap will specify what size hole to drill. A pipe thread tap is tapered, so NO - do not tap all the way through. You want to run the tap in a couple of turns, then thread in your adapter to check the fit - you want the bottom of the probe adapter to sit flush with the inside wall of the ex manifold. Leave about 1 turn from the bottom when fitting it by hand to allow you to snug it up on the final installation. You may also want to get a plug to put in the manifold so there isn't a hole in it when the engine is put back together (unless you are going to leave the probe with the shop).

When I did mine a drilled slowly almost all the way through then started the truck and let the D/P push the chips out while I drilled all the way through. Then tap with lots of grease on the tap to hold the chips. Then take a pen magnet and sweep for remaning chips in the hole. :)

Ok, I will give that a try. As it turns out, the manifold will not be off the truck.

Pulled the head, but left it on. They say I spun the #5 conrod bearing. another new crank. this one had about 1500 miles on it. They won't even get me a car.

The last dollar chrysler EVER sees from me.
