EGR Service

I purchased the EGR kit from Geno's for my 2012 6.7 Cummins. What kind of tool is needful to remove the back bolts on the cooler? The first time the service was needed the local dealer performed it for $450. The last time I did it and was unable to get the cooler off so the maintenance was completed to that point and reassembled. I did inject some air into the open end of the cooler prior to the reassembly and not sure if this is advisable?? I get a P2BAC DTC with some frequency and wonder if this is related? The summary might be: Mechanically inclined, generally ignorant, and poverty stricken.

There are several videos on Youtube giving step by step instructions. Pretty easy process; just time consuming.

Shed the EGR. H&S mini max computer and delete kit. Mpg will go up, driveability much better.

Thanks for the help. The thread suggesting the crow's foot might work, I'll try it. Will also search around in Youtube. Would like nothing better than the full delete on dpf and egr ... but tow under authority running hotshot and can't get around those nasty lil' DOT roadsides and annual inspections.

I noticed on a prior thread that some have suggested keeping up with the CCV filter at the 67,500 interval and skipping the EGR cleaning if the truck is worked and not lugged around. Any wisdom on this? I typically pull 10 to 15 thousand pounds and run 95% highway at interstate speeds.

I was wondering the same thing, the book only mentions replacing the CCV at 67,500 on my 2015 and no mention of the EGR valve and cooler service at any time.
My 08 required it, did it twice on that truck. Anyone know for sure? Thanks in advance.

DEF is injected after combustion and after the Turbo, so it has no influence on the exhaust at the EGR. I just went through my C&C EGR this weekend, at only 61K miles it was sooted up real bad. I pulled the intake horn as well and vacuumed the soot from the heaters and cleaned the horn. BTW, I took advantage of the Horn being off and eliminated the boost bolt and drilled and tapped an 1/8" NPT for my boost fitting.

Check the latest TDR Magazine, Issue 89, page 77, the last paragraph in the right column written by Joe Donnelley. He is quoting Alan Volk, a Cummins engine representative at May Madness. Only servicing the CCV is required. No service is required on the EGR system.

I see it on page 77, but mine is a '12 pre-def. I serviced the valve on the intake side today, not too bad on soot. Thanks for the help Bill.

I have a couple of extra gaskets that were not required on my C&C and the boost bolt if anyone is interested. I'll even pay for the shipping if it's a couple of bucks.

However, DEF equipped trucks have significantly reduced EGR.

PreDEF trucks had more egr to meet emissions standards.

Ya that's right, but I thought it just performs less Regens. So less Regens means less soot?

Less EGR means it is allowed to run at a higher (more optimal) temp.

Which means it runs more efficiently producing less soot. Allowing fewer regens, less soot and less recirculation soot.

The pre-def's ran cooler (more EGR) to prevent NOx. But DEF now takes care of NOx after the fact.

So, with everything being what it is, I guess it wouldn't be a bad idea to check the EGR valve (even though it isn't required) for soot while replacing the CCV. Doesn't take that much time. If it's really sooted, clean it and check the cooler. Sounds reasonable to me. Thanks.
