I'm not sure I agree with the oil being this black being a modern CR thing. I used to drive an 85 Chevy with a 6.2 naturally aspirated diesel and it would do the exact same thing. You could run fresh oil for 10 seconds and blacker than coffee. Conversely, my wife jeep CRD will keep the oil honey colored for several thousand miles after oil change. It has a Green Diesel Engineering tune with deleted egr. I never have understood the whole black oil thing.

My stock turbo is the top charger in an ATS 5000 twins. It is modified by opening up the waste gate port to 1" (to keep drive pressure in check) and the waste gate itself is activated by the larger 71mm ATS 5000 bottom charger. It will start to open at about 12 psi (of the large charger) and is fully open by 24 psi.
 
Stoich rich combustion is the predominant factor in black oil, all modern diesels are tuned that way to limit emissions. As power goes up the soot goes up, not really fair to compare a CRD to a CTD becasue their output levels are so different and the injector technology is far different. A 6.2 is not even a consideration cuz it was a joke to begin with.
 
My dad had an '84 6.2L Burb and even turned up with a Banks Turbo the oil never went black like the 04.5-07's.
 
The turbo helped the soot, the NA ones were really awful. Even turned up and turbo'ed they never got much over 2/3 the HP of the newer engines, lack of fuel, a turbo, and lack of emissions controls helped quite a bit in the soot generation. Downside was they wanted to overheat, melt down, fly apart, etc. Push a gen1 engine to 350 HP and the oil gets black really fast also, all about fuel and combustion.
 
I agree about the 6.2s but we had good luck with them. My dad drove his to over 300K and I nearly had that on mine. But we never worked them hard.

Could you elaborate on the difference in injection technology of the CRD. I thought it was pretty much the same; CP3 and Bosch injectors. I think it does use 2 pilot events though.

If Black oil is from running "rich", shouldn't I have seen some different after switching to twins since they make some much more boost - even at cruising load?
 
Yeah, they lasted better not being worked but thta is not what we bought them for. Two engines in less than 100k being worked did not sit well with most people. Detroit\GM accomplished what they set out to do at that time with that engine, but, longevity was always its downfall.

Two pilot events and probably 5-7 events total is the difference, amount of fuel is definitely contributory. With only 2 events and almost twice the HP you just end up with more soot, not as efficient at complete combustion.
