Hypothetically speaking... Offroad use only ofcourse. With the 2010 can you simply unplug the EGR and only get a CEL and not go into limp mode? Will it fill the DPF faster or is there any other ill effects of this? When I go hunting and drive around on dirt roads for miles and miles my mileage is horrible compared to my old 5. 9. I used to get like 25mpg driving around slow gravel roads, now I get like 15 or 16. I get better on the freeway going 80mph.

So what do the experts here have to say about unplugging the EGR on a 2010 bone stock truck. Just a CEL? A big nono?

I personally don't have any experience but I know of others who have driven in upwards of 50,000 miles with their 2010's and the EGR unplugged with no ill-effects / no limp mode to date.

Some believe that it could ultimately harm the DPF in the exhaust system as there might be a relationship between the EGR system and the DPF. But there isn't anyone who's come out and said, "I ran xxx miles with my EGR unplugged and now my DPF is plugged or trashed. " At least I haven't heard of that happening yet.

I have read that the problem comes after it has been unplugged for a long time and soots up. Then, if plugged in again for some reason, the soot discharges and quickly clogs the DPF. Could require a trip to the dealer to clean out.

What I found for 2010 and trucks with J35 updates, unplugging the egr gets nothing (at least California versions). I found this out on my truck after the J35 update, unplugging the EGR as we normally do prevents regen from working correctly. Also what I found with J35 updates, PIDs where swapped with DPF and SOX regen. I noticed this after my dpf reached a load of 7. 0 on and regens where only lasting less than 5 minutes. Once I plugged the EGR back in and got on the highway, regen started and DPF load went to 4. 9 after about 15 minutes.

are they not all 50 state emmisions trucks? pulling my 5-er the mpg's were horrible, like in the upper 6's low 7's, unplugged it jumped up to a more reasonable 9's

didnt notice any power loss.

Ok, I admit it. I have no earthly clue what you said.

What's up guzzler? See you on all the cool boards. I was having a hard time with his reply as well. Seems he is saying the DPF does get clogged with egr unplugged.

TDR is HERE!!! You ARE firedude. You must be yfdcap somewhere else!

I got the delete pipe and downpipe in Saturday. But was finishing up the pyro install this AM -- doing the wiring and punching through the firewall, grommets, etc... . Final install is clean and tight...

Might start the exhaust this week.

I unplugged mine and running around empty I get 20. 5mpg and towing a 21foot boat I averaged 14. 7 over 600 miles this weekend. Quite a difference. I would say a solid 3mpg better mileage all around. Ofcourse I got the cel. The only nil effect I have noticed so far is the remote start does not work. The engine starts then the truck starts off saying there is an error with remote start. Probably because of the cel.

So then are you suggesting that removing the EGR connection MAY result in an increase of the MPGs and ONLY give a CEL on the dash? There are no other things happening in the system or CPU to have a bad ending?

No. And the clean oil is an added bonus! I unplugged the EGR after leaving the dealer with 44-ish miles on and never went back. I changed the oil at 1250 miles and it was nice and clean and now with 1700 miles on this oil it looks almost new.

Also I just did a 700 mile road trip lightly loaded cruise on 65 most of the time (2 lane hwy, some parts were quite hilly) with some slow in town mixed in and got home with the dash-o-meter reading 21. 7 which in reality is just over 20 mpg.

Is there any way to disable the CEL for the EGR and leave it working to indicate other troubles if they come up?

Does removal of the EGR lead work for all models of the 3rd and 4th gen of the diesels?
Frank

The only way to turn off or disable the cel is with a tuner. I believe it is the same plug on all the 6. 7s and works the same way.
