Since no body else has answered I'll take a stab at it. (and I'm sure someone will eventually correct any errors I may make ;))
I don't believe the 5. 9 ever had an EGR valve. EGR was accomplished with cam profiles and I'm not sure what else but it was a passive system that had only a minimal effect because Cummins engineers were able to achieve emissions specs by less invasive means.
The 6. 7 is s different animal and has a complicated EGR system with tons of extra junk they had to hang on the eng. Ever notice how high the front of the hood is on the new 4th gens? Yup, part of the EGR plumbing is under that area.

thanks PD that's what I'm thinking too. the dpf seem to have major issues when towing wondering what people are doing?

The 5. 9's never used an extenral EGR system, it was all dine internally with valve timing, turbo, etc.

The 6. 7's until 2012 used an external EGR system like all the others to meet emissions. I think the new 2013 SCR engines have completly done away with EGR now.

Thanks guys just curious . That EGR seems to be a problem on the Duratrashes are they having the same on the 6. 7's . Also DPF are they a problem when running programmers just like the Duratrashes ?? Bob/ Cerb ? anyone?

Have you ever driven a Duramax? I have driven several and they all seemed to perform well and the owners weren't sorry they bought them.

The 2013 have not done away with EGR. The SCR engine have much bigger plumbing and cooler for EGR and supposedly run a much smaller percentage also.

At least thats what I see looking under the hood on my sons new Mega DRW 3500. He picked it up on Wed, so not much experience with it except to say it is QUIET inside and the ex brake is VERY strong. I think the brakes will sieze up before they wear out!!!

Motorhead the kid who works for me has the LMM motor ans hauls a 40' 5er major problems on trip overheated multiple times to 260 power loss (probably defueling) Dpf wouldn't regen . In the shop now EGR bad and Mechanic thinks the DPF bad too. BIG BUCKS :{. He always makes fun of my Dodge guess who's laughing now:D:D

Thanks Morris does he plan on doing any big pulls with it? curios on well it does. Nice to hear they keep making improvements

I had some insulation work done last year. The installer had to do the Lemon Law buyout on his '06 CTD. His friend bought one the same day and has great luck with it.
After receiving compensation for the lemon, the insulator bought an '06 Duramax. At 175K of daily pulling a trailer with all his livelihood in it,the truck had had a water pump and lots of preventive maintenance. That was a year ago and I don't know what has transpired since.
You never know...

My last truck for work was a 2005 Silverado. Zero engine related issues, ran very hard with lots of Idle time. I could however, write a book on the constant front end issues and the wonderful automatic trans that everyone rants and raves about.

I know a lot of guys that would install an egr block plate in those trucks, but I never felt the need. I never had an issue with the system or engine performance.

I have seen the 32 minute youtube. Anything pushed past its original design limits, like most of us do including me, will have something fail. Yes the Duramax's overheat, the ford 6. 0 is at best a P. O. S. yet a neighbor of mine has a real early 6. 0 with 200,000 miles on it and has never had a head off of it AND he tows a BIG goose neck equipment trailer. Go figure. Mentioned also was the DPF failures. Again I say if someone pushes the "Achilles Heal" that is on any and every vehicle out there, he is going to have problems. Please understand that I am NOT trying to argue with you about whether a Duramax is better or worse than our beloved Cummins powered trucks. I personally have seen more times than not that the guy that grenades something has done something or driven the engine, vehicle, transmission, ect past its design limits then someone or a RIVAL group calls it a TURD.

Actually the biggest issues, thou mostly fixed thru software these days, are people who don't tow. The more you tow the less dpf issues due to constant heat in the exhaust, and more modulation of the VGT and exhaust brake use.

Really the 6. 7 with EGR/DPF is a much better motor today (not talking 2013's) than it was in 2007. 5, and really all that has changed is software. A friend just bought an 07. 5 with 89K miles on it (new turbo/software about 8K miles ago) and it runs better and gets better economy than it did new thanks to improved software.
