After pulling 14,000lbs. plus the gooseneck with my dad's 01' I was letting it cool down before shutoff and notice the egt gauge get to about 400 degrees and then brief jump to 600 degrees, back down to about 350 degrees and then back up to about 600 degrees. When it got to 300 degrees I shut it down. Anybody have any ideas on why the needle would jump like this?

I noticed something interesting today too. After a light pull on the highway (5000#) I let it cool down to 250F and then shut the truck off. I left the key on to continue listening to music and slowly the temp creeped back up to 310 after 5 ins or so. So I guess this means we should really let them cool off properly before shutdown.
 
at what point are you risking damage with exhaust temps?



I always let mine cool down to 250 or 300, but as Brandon said, sometimes it climbs back up after you shut it off.
 
Heat soak maybe? See it all the time at the dragstrip with the racecar. That's why we use an electric water pump and circulate the water in the block after a pass.

This is normal. With the engine off, you're not pulling air through the engine, so the residual heat in the engine heats the air up. Then when you fire it back up, the EGT will spike.
