Trying to figure out whats going on with two trucks. opposite problems. My truck seems to stay cold, and my buddys truck is always scalding hot.

Saw him this weekend and cked it out. we cannot find a boost leak and he is opening the wastegate at 42#'s of boost. His truck idles at 400 to 425 EGT! If he first starts it up in the morning his guage will say over 300 at idle before he gets out the drive way. Mine settles in at 225 to 250 EGT at idle.

Cruise down the highway is 800 to 850 for him and 450 to 600 for me, at about 75 MPH.

he has an auto 95 and I have an 94 converted to 5spd. Both have 4" straight pipe exhaust, Both have BHAF, Both have 315/75/16, He has 3. 55 gears and I have 4. 11, we both have mistery injectors so to speak, the same home cut cam plate slid all the way forward.

The big difference is injection pump timing. Mine is advanced the proverbial 1/4 inch. His I believe has sliped because of his overheating problem happened all at once. Either that or his guage is off. His is Autometer and mine is Banks.

What I'm looking for here is what have you done and how did it effect your EGT's?

What happened with your EGT's as you continued to modify?

His truck definitely sounds retarded. :)

There must be some really late burning fuel to keep over 400 degree temps at idle. For what it's worth, mine is the same as yours is temperature wise.

What no stories? What mods did you do first and how did your EGT's respond, do you do your own work? Did you do it in stages?

Thanks for the response and lets hear some more. Doesn't even have to relate to the problem at hand (although I'll just about never turn down free advice, unless I'm in stuborn mode).

Does he have a tight torque converter? I would think a tight torque converter would raise egt temp slightly idling around, but thats it.

Mine runs like you describe, although far less modified.

My money is on the slipped timing.

He does have a tight torque converter. As well as 3 trans coolers all the way across the front of his condenser blocking flow and heating the air before it gets to his intercooler, but it didn't do it right off. Partly why I believe its his timing has slipped.

On a side note I saw one of those Fluid drive old buicks mentioned in last months TDR yesterday and man it sounded strange as it drove off, smooth but strange.

I had an EGT problem for over two years. Many people tried to diagnose the problem, including some of the best on this forum.

Finally, I bought a used EGT guage, it was reasonable with EGTs. Then I bought a new guage. I don't want to guess how many hours and dollars I spent due to a faulty EGT guage. The guage was my only problem.

Now, I run with two EGT guages. I will not chase EGTs due to a faulty guage.

Just for grins, swap probes ... see if that makes any difference. There have been posts about bad pyros. :)

might be.....

does he have an exhaust break? i did some turbo swapping and when i was done with the merry go round i ended up putting the stocker back on for a rebuild if one i messed up. my stocker had an exhaust brake but it was failing to open fully causing my temps to riseat idle and all the way through the rpm range. i could hear a slight hiss but since i had been running without an exhaust brake i forgot it was there since it wasnt hookes up to a switch and so i hunted and hunted and finally the ray of light came on and now all of you know how retarded i am :--) yes nothing but the short bus for me ..... as long as its cummins powered of course :-laf

I have an oppointment with both trucks, and three of us in a buddy's garage tommorrow. I believe his is hot because when he shuts it off it sits there and pings and pops like a catalytic convertor coolin off, for a good couple of minutes, and mine doesn't do that.

But as long we have both trucks in the same place it sure would be easy to just swap probes to see. His Auto meter boost guage was bad and read 7#'s of boost at idle. I will probably look to see where his timing pin in the side of the pump is just to ck if its in the general area.

Someone has had the barrels out of his pump. the DV is still stock paint but the nut on either side have been removed all the way back. What does this mean. I forgot to mention before, his AFC boost line was disconected when he baught the truck. No waste gate and no AFC boost signal, but still blew soot.

Faulty Auto Meter guage at least. Swapped in my Banks and voila, much lower temps. I did use my probe to. So we loaded up and took his truck to NM. Just got home today, loved Albuquerque NM. If you ever go, eat breakfast at the Frontier Restuarant. Breakfast burrito, eggs, cheese, carne adavada(?), and green chile. Oo. I'm from NC and it was like BBQ for breakfast. Just doesn't get any better than that!

Thanks Reddog1 and Forrest :)

Which would be a more accurate guage Auto Meter or Banks?

Who makes Banks?

Heepdriver - You are welcome. I sure wish someone would have suggested that my problem could have been the guage. Oh well, sometimes things are just too simple for our complex minds.
