I'm brand new here, but I have already learned alot! I have an '06 CTD Ram 2500. I had the EGT gauge installed. I watch the temp when I'm pulling my 9K# camper, especially up the grade.

Two questions: 1. What is max temp I can let it rise to before I back off? (I have been trying to keep it under 1200.

2. When I let the engine idle for the suggested times in the owner's manual, the EGT comes down to about 350 to 400. Is this ok, or should I let it come down more?

Thanks,

Jim

Jim,

My '06 will run as hot as 1350 while towing. No problem with that, the third generation trucks have valve seat inserts and are designed to tolerate hotter temps than the earlier ones (my '94 suffered no ill effects from extended 1350 degrees either, although I tried to keep it under 1250 for the most part).

As to your cool down temps, like yours, my '06 takes FOREVER to cool down to 350 degress. I believe 350 is cool enough for shutdown but don't forget that you might be heat soaked from a long pull too. 350 from running around town empty is very different than 350 from pulling a big load up a big hill. In that case, give her some more time even though it might show 350 on the guage.

Just my opinion.

RAH out.

Mine is an '03, and I try not to let it get above 1250 on a long pull with our fiver. Our trailer weighs around 17k. I can run the EGTs up pretty fast if I don't watch them. I have heard the newer rigs can tolerate a little higher temps, but I don't know for sure.

As far as cooldown, if I am running around town empty, I will shut down at 350 if I am in a hurry. Otherwise I wait till 300 to shut down. I have noticed it cools off faster if I turn off the AC.

If I am pulling the trailer, and have had the EGTs up there for a while, I make time to wait to at least 300. Sometimes I will let it idle longer, even after getting to 300, depending on the situation.

Good luck, and enjoy the truck.

What does the manual suggest for cool down times?

Compared to 350, my 280 degree's at shut down isn't bad, but then again I don't have a cat and have 5" pipe turbo back. :D As far as cool down times go I used to watch my pyro gauge when I first installed it and would look to see where it settled and that's what I do now, wait for it to settle down to 290 or 280 dependingon how big of a rush I'm in and shut her down, but it doesn't take very long at all to settle down.
