Hello,

I am another new guy.

I have a 2001, high output, six speed, 2500.

Just ordered boost and egt guages for A-piller mount from Banks.

My question; Where should I mount the egt, in the exhaust man. (prior to turbo) our in the down pipe ( after the trubo)?? If the sensor probe should break off due to hotter temps/fatugue it will also take the turbo, true? Down streem, after the turbo I have heard that the temp. is approx. 300deg cooler. If so, do you just do the simple math or is this temp a good one to use as indicated.

Sure would like some expert advise.

By the way, the Banks Boys recommended to mount it in the exhaust man. Hotter/more accurate, they say.

You'll get some varying opinions on this one.

Pre-turbo is good for measuring the amount of heat your engine is making and passing into your turbo to prevent damage to engine and turbo.

Post-turbo is good for measuring shutdown temps to make sure your turbo has cooled sufficiently to ensure long life.

Me, I have mine mounted pre-turbo since I wanted to see how hot things were getting in the engine to avoid damage (no where close yet :D ).

If you go with post-turbo, it's more than simple math to estimate the pre-turbo reading. Since the post reading is affected by how much boost you're generating and how hot your turbo already is. It will also probably be a little slower to respond since the turbo will absorb some heat on acceleration, then be dissipating heat when you let off the go pedal.

As for the pre-turbo probe breaking and killing your turbo, I think I've only seen one case of that ever reported here. And that was a one off situation where the gauge was reading incorrect and the temps went way past 1600* and damaged the thermocouple.

Just my $. 04.....

P. S. You can always get the best of both worlds and install thermocouple pre and post and tie them into one gauge with the proper switch. :D

Pre Turbo more fun

I installed mine in Feburary, I knew ther would be bombing in the future and I went pre turbo, it fun and move fast IsoPro EV series.

I used grease on the drill and tap and a vacuum cleaner, and followed it up with magnet until no particles of metaql could be retreaves. then bumped the moter a few times before I started it.
