I am installing an EGT probe for a friend(mine is installed pre turbo and soon to be both). There will be no engine modifications except a exhaust brake. The truck is used to tow a 5er. He is suggesting installing post turbo mostly for engine shutdown and says it is good enough there to monitor the engine. So have at it and let the chips fall where they may. I KNOW THIS IS ANOTHER EGT THREAD. Sorry but he will be looking at this thread to finish making up his mind. :D

???????????

I'm getting ready to install an ebrake for towing the 5er and I am going to install the probe post turbo to begin with. I plan on installing a 2nd probe pre turbo this winter and have the capability to switch between them. I really think that is the best of both worlds to be able to look at both temps. I would agree with your friend that the post turbo is the best way to check for cooldown.

Hey man, it's his truck and if that's what he wants, go for it.

Why would you want to know what the temp is after cooling(unless you had had 2 probes)? Should it not be where you get the max temp because that's where the damage will come in? How can you know how much the difference (Post vs. Pre)is unless you have 2 probes). . I did mine pre turbo and do tow... . I know the TST PM3 box has a nice feature that will shut things down when you hit a certain pre set temp +or- 50 and that feature would be most usefull pre turbo. . My 2 cents.....

Since your friend is planning no additional engine mods, the post turbo probe for shutdown will be quite sufficient. Without the additional mods, the EGTs will not reach critical measurements. 300 degrees post turbo for shutdown will serve him well in knowing when to shut down after that long tow.

Good luck,

David

Hemi 71,

Most of the Powermax 3's do not have the temp shut down feature. Mark (at TST) says there is a different program if you want to hook a temp probe to the PM3 *and * it will only work if you get the remote control that has the EGT and boost displays built in.

Up in our area, nobody in our group seems to leave the engine stock, so I recommend they install their probe pre-turbo.

But if this guy is sure he's leaving it bone stock then I'd say go ahead with post-turbo.
