i have my egt guage to install. . the probe install instructions tells me to drill a 7/16" hole into manifold and then tap with a 1/4" npt pipe tap... the probe has a sleeve that is i/2" that goes into the manifold first and the probe then screws down into the sleeve... . should not the pipe tap be a 1/2' instead of 1/4??? it is a DiPricol guage from tst... any help with my confusion will be appreciated... thanks guys... #ad

Make sure you get the correct tap. I took the probe with me to the store and checked against the tap before I got it.

dustoff,

7/16" bit is correct for a 1/4" NPT tap. If you hold the bit and the tap side by side it makes sense. Home Despot sells a 7/16" bit/1/4" NPT tap package for around $7. 00.

By the way, the tap handles that say they hold tap sizes 1/4" to 1/2" won't handle 1/4" NPT taps. I used a T handle ratchet with an 8 point 7/16" socket to hold the tap.

The tap you need is 1/4-18 NPT, this tap produces a tapered thread, therefore it is depth sensative, if you tap too deep your fitting will not tighten. The usual depth to tap is about 2/3 of the way in measured along the threaded section of the tap. If this is your first time doing a pipe thread, drill a 7/16 hole in a piece of scrap metal and tap slowly testing the fit with your fitting. The correct depth is 2. 5 to 3 threads engaging finger tight, at this point put the tap back in you test piece and use tape to mark the depth. When tapping your cast iron manifold it would be done dry, no lubricant, if your test piece is steel you need a lubricant when tapping. The normal hand tapping routine is to turn it in a 1/2 turn and back off a 1/4 turn to break off the chip, this prevents the tap jambing and/or tearing of the threads. By the way there are good egt instalation instructions on the TST web site.

Couple of other points to keep in mind: I was told not to drill on the 'seam' line of the elbow casting. Sounded good to me. So drill off center in some good meat. Secondly there is some goop, I think 'anti sieze' stuff to use when you put in the probe so you can get it out again if need be. Maybe someone else remembers the name of this stuff.

Finally, you didn't mention pre or post turbo... . I was assuming post turbo. It's less involved and a lower temp reading too, so it's a trade off.

Run a search on this and you'll find a bunch of stuff on the subject.

Good luck.

The 'anti sieze' stuff is a copper based anti-sieze, can be purchased in just about any automotive store in a little tube for around 5 bucks... I would definitely use it.

Dustoff,

I havn't changed my housing yet so I can't say for sure, but I think there may be 2 holes, not just one large one coming from the exhaust. Don't drill without looking or finding out from someone that knows for sure. If you are going to pull the turbo first then disregard this reply.

If you haven't already tackled the task of installing your EGT probe, you would be well advised to follow the suggestion made in an earlier post and go to tstproducts.com and check out the detailed instructions with pictures! I'm a novice and somewhat mechanically impaired, but even I was successful in making the installation by using the information there. I installed pre-turbo without disconnecting it(strictly adhering to all of the detailed instructions from TST and other posts in the TDR Discussion Forum) and had no problems. Good luck.
