I talked to a dealer today and asked if they would drill and tap my 2010 ?

She ( Service gal ) said the edge and such didnot need it that the probe was already there from the factory and just pluging into the OBD port would give me the temp ? Is it pre or post tubro if it is turly there ? I am thinking of going Smarty Jr with the Edge for gauges.

I do not know for sure, but I did drill my exhaust manifold. Almost every other owner of a 6. 7L engine has drilled theirs also. If you do a search you will find information on how and where to drill your manifold. Mine is drilled pre-turbo.

When I was stock I could see almost 1450F during regen and towing in the Black Hills of SD with my 5er attached.

I now see no more than 1000F when towing in the mountains with my 5er.

CFollett - Am I reading your post right? The service writer from your dealership told you that the EGT probe was already pre-installed from the factory?

Does that mean that it’s a plug and play type assembly? I could go out and purchase a EGT gauge, run the wires, and connect it to a factory drilled and tapped connection. Because if that’s the case, THANK YOU Dodge!!! When I had my old 2007-5. 9L, I wanted to be able to monitor every single aspect of my truck, but was too much of a “wussy” to drill and tap anywhere near my turbo. Now that I have my 2011, I am no longer a “wussy” I am a straight “P%$&Y” and don’t want to drill at all. . It would be awesome if how I am interpreting what you wrote is true…

Anyone have any further information on this?

Baloney! You should have asked the female airhead who told you that to please point out the location of that magic new pyro probe that only she knew was factory installed by Cummins.

I hope you know better than to ever follow the service advice of that woman. She is clueless.

Its amazing what clueless people at dealerships will tell you. As far a drilling and tapping the manifold it is not that hard to do.

SierraRam - I know its not that hard to drill and tap the manifold, its just "growing a set" big enough to do it!! Lol

It is simlilar to many other firsts in a person's life, including women, IRS audits, Micro-Brewed Beer, Root Canals, etc.....

After the first experience the rest are never as bad... ... . :-laf

Just do it!!!!

I'm doing my fourth one tomorrow on Ol' E-bay, my '97 winter beater. Stuck the pyro and boost gauges on the pillar last weekend when I changed the headliner and found it to be most boring this week with a pair of non-functioning black faces and red pointers staring back at me... ... ... .

Seriously, if you do attempt it yourself get a drill and tap kit from Irwin or someone similar, then the drill bit is exactly the size needed for the tap to make a proper thread.

Perhaps the lady at the dealership is not a total airhead. There ARE two EGT sensors in the exhaust pipe that can be read via the OBD-II port. They are both post turbo. I think the ECM uses them to monitor the catalyst and DPF temperatures, especially during a regen when the ECM is trying to burn off soot but not overheat the DPF.

That said, most people are interested in pre-turbo temperatures, so they drill and tap the manifold as everyone has said.

I drilled my manifold pre-turbo just below the "Y" with no problems. Just a heads up the manifold at that point is about 3/4" thick. It surprised me when I keep drilling and drilling and drilling and then finally got through. Keep the drill and tap coated with grease and you will not drop shavings into the turbo.

Yes, it is 3/4" thick in that location, but there is no center divider like there was in the 5. 9's.

I drilled an 1/8" pilot hole 3/4 of the way through, then greased a 21/64" drill and drilled through in several steps, cleaning and regreasing as I went. same with the tap, 4 or 5 steps, cleaning and regreasing as you progress.

here's mine;
